Justice Newsletter - October 11

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

A reminder that Monday, October 12th is a student holiday/teacher workday. Our staff will be working on the School Improvement and Innovation Plan as well as get some much needed planning and grading time. Classes and operations will resume on Tuesday, October 13th.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email me or any member of our admin team.

New Back Gate Access Policy

Due to safety and security concerns, effective October 19th, Justice High School will begin locking the back gate located at the northwest corner of the building, from 11pm-6am on weekdays and all weekend. The fields and track will still be accessible during these times by using the front gate, located at the southeast corner of the building, next to our main gym.

Asynchronous Learning Day on Thursday, October 29th

Justice HS is hosting registered grade 11 students to participate in the PSAT exam on Thursday, October 29, 2020. We will be utilizing staff to facilitate the exam at Justice HS. October 29th will run asynchronously for all staff and students in all FCPS high schools. Students not participating in the PSAT are expected to log onto Google Classroom and complete the asynchronous work that is posted by their teachers for their Red Day classes (Periods 1, 3, 5, 7) during regular school hours (8:10 am – 2:55 pm). Attendance will be based on student engagement in their asynchronous work or participation in the PSAT exam. Grade 11 students who are participating in the PSAT exam are not expected to complete the asynchronous work for their classes that day.

In Person Tech Support at Justice

Students and families are encouraged to come to Justice HS, if there’s a tech issue that can’t be solved remotely.  In-person tech support is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-2:30pm.

Families can also call the tech hotline: 833-921-FCPS for additional support.

A message from Mr. Villalobos, Our Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist

I hope you all are settling well into the new school year. While this year presents many challenges, it is also a year of great possibilities. Best of luck to all of you this school year.

WARNING - The Benadryl Challenge on TikTok;
I want to bring your attention to a dangerous trend that has appeared over the summer. Using the social media app TikTok, viewers are encouraged to participate in the “Benadryl Challenge”. This is when large doses of the antihistamine Benadryl are taken to induce hallucinations.  Experts say excessive doses of Benadryl can cause serious health issues, even causing death in some situations. Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Benadryl, has posted a warning about the challenge, and TikTok officials said they’ve been removing posts that publicize the challenge. Vaping is Down but Disposable Vapes are Soaring;
A recent article by the CDC reported a 7.9% decrease in current high school vape use from 2019 to 2020. This decrease equates to roughly 1 million high school students no longer being regular vape users. On the other hand, the flavor ban that aided in this decrease did not include disposable vapes. In the last year, use of these disposable vapes have increased from 2.4% to 26.5% among current high school vape users. While the overall decrease in vaping is great news and we are making progress, we all must continue to work together to curb youth vaping.
