Mustang Message - 10/18/2020

A Message from the Principal

Beginning tomorrow, October 19th, Monday schedules will change from the schedules that we started in the beginning of the year.  Up until now, Mondays have been used by classroom teachers to build relationships with and between students in small groups, as well as to complete assessments with individual and small groups of students.  Starting tomorrow, students will be joining their teachers at 9:15 a.m. for a Morning Meeting or check-in for the school day, and then will be assigned asynchronous work to complete. Only students identified for extra time with the teacher will be participating in small group instruction.

And, did you know that even while most students continue in distance learning, the Bren Mar Park PTA continues to be hard at work!?!  So, far this school year, the BMP PTA has donated the BMP cinch bags that held the school supplies provided at the beginning of the school year, put together a grab and go icee treat for children and their families, and this week will host the annual BINGOween event (virtually this year).  We do hope that you will join us on Friday evening for this fun, social opportunity!  They continue to look for those who want to help.  If you're interested, please contact bmp.pta@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Williams

Principal

Specialist Spotlights

I am so proud of our students for showing up and working hard!  Thank you for showing up for your children and letting them know that they can do hard things with diligence and perseverance.

Our focus in counseling lessons has been Social Emotional Learning is naming our emotions.  Why is it important to know what we are feeling and to be able to put a name to that feeling?  When we are able to name our emotion, we can then begin to deal with it.  We talked about being good managers of our emotions. Once we know what we are feeling then we can successfully manage those feelings.  Then we learned about different strategies for managing emotions.  What can we do when we are feeling angry, disappointed, frustrated, sad, excited, etc.?  Students gave ideas such as go for a bike ride, play games with my family, and talk to my mom.  In grades 4 and 5, we explored emotional thermostats, we need to manage that emotion.  They learned the idiom, “blow your lid off,” losing control of our emotions like a pot of boiling water that causes the lid to blow off when the heat is too intense.

My goal for your children is that they become star managers of their emotions.  Your support is vital in modelling strategies for dealing with emotions and talking with them about the emotions they experience during the day.  If you have any questions, you can reach me at jblanier@fcps.edu
