Walking Wednesdays

Walk to School Day & Walking Wednesdays

Students and families are being encouraged to take part in weekly Walking Wednesdays during the 2020-21 school year, to help promote mental and physical health. Despite the virtual start to the school year, the Safe Routes to School office will be promoting Walking Wednesdays throughout the year, with a different theme each month. This will give students a chance to wake up their brains and fit in a little exercise before sitting down to a day of virtual school. Walks will be held weekly. For more information click here.

October’s Walking Wednesday will take place on October 7th, which is also Walk to School Day. Participants are encouraged to walk in their neighborhoods; families, schools, and neighborhoods can register their participation online for Walk to School Day

This is a fantastic way to keep your students reading! Look for more information shortly.

Laptop

Please Read If You Have A Crossfield Laptop!

A crucial maintenance task that can keep your school laptop performing throughout the school year is regularly restarting it. This both installs updates and ends background processes. We would like to recommend shutting down at the end of the school day. On Tuesday nights, leave it on, but plugged in, and restart the device on Wednesday mornings. Microsoft uses Tuesdays to push out updates, and this will ensure that they are installed in a timely manner. It’s something that we encourage at school, but it’s awfully hard with nearly 600 computers that have been lent to families!

More help for troubleshooting other issues you may experience can be found on FCPS’s website: Tech Support for Families. It may behoove students to bookmark this site, as it will help solve most common problems. Obviously we want our students to have the best experience possible in this virtual environment!

Square One Art

PTO Sponsored Square One Art

The PTO is sponsoring our annual Square 1 Art fundraiser this year!  It might look a little different this time around, but the end products are the same. The Square 1 Art art project provides you the opportunity to purchase keepsakes and gifts featuring your child's art! Wouldn't you love to share your child's artwork with family and friends? As a bonus, every order profits our school.

Just follow these 3 Simple Steps:

  1. Your child creates art. Art Creation instructions will be provided by Mrs. Muha.
  2. Take a photo of your child's art with your phone or tablet and upload the art online at square1art.com/shop/upload
  3. If you would prefer to have your student's art mailed instead of uploading it, you may do so by dropping it off at Crossfield. Art collection days will be Thursday October 15, Friday October 16 and Monday October 19. Please place your child's art in the designated box outside the school main doors.  Be sure to include your child's first and last name, grade and teacher.  This is strictly for the fundraiser - not for your student to turn in to Mrs. Muha for their grade.

You may then begin to shop for keepsakes!

There is also a Parent Portal which walks you through each step of the way and includes tips on how to take the best picture.  The portal can be accessed at: https://www.square1art.com/parent-portal/

The deadline for uploading your student's art and ordering products is November 18th.

Please email Pam Liercke at pliercke@yahoo.com with any questions.

IMPORTANT

Student Rights & Responsibilities

Please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr. After reviewing the information, complete the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using this link.

Please note: The form must be filled out one time per student.

Parent Consent Form For Select Digital Resources

At Crossfield ES, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find Crossfield's list of the resources that require parental consent here.

On this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval, and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use these resources until we have received permission.

If you have questions about how these resources will be used with your student, please contact your student's teacher.

I-Ready Assessment in September, October & November

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment, i-Ready, for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students.

The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive screening again in the winter and/or in the spring. Crossfield students will test as follows:

Kindergarten: November 3-13

First Grade: October 4-9

Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found here.. Another resource is this video, to help families be as supportive as possible as their students(s) take the i-Ready Diagnostic at home. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s test coordinator (Lea Fadden, ltfadden@fpcs.edu).
