Sangster News You Choose

A Message from Ms. Jankovich

Hello Sangster!

Happy October to everyone.  Hopefully you have not met your pumpkin spice quota for the year yet.  During these unprecedented times, it’s important to try and safely enjoy as many sounds, sights, and smells of the season that you can.  I highly recommend taking the time for a weekend road trip north, as the leaves are already starting to change in some places.  I have a trip planned to my hometown of Mercer, Pennsylvania the weekend of Halloween and know that I will need to stop at least once along the way to breathe in country air.  We all, students included, need to unplug and recharge. I would love to see any photos you have of fun, fall outings with your families.  Feel free to email them to me.

Thank you for your continued support of virtual learning. As you know, FCPS recently shared plans for a phased, in-person cohort of learning for specific populations of students.  At this time, Sangster ES does not have any students returning to in-person learning.  Our goal remains closely aligned with that of FCPS - high-quality instruction in a safe learning environment.  For more information, please view Dr. Brabrand’s latest message at: Superintendent Message.

During the most recent pick-up of student materials, many of you communicated your gratitude and words of encouragement to the teachers and staff at Sangster.  I promise I have passed on all of that information. While our halls may be empty, our hearts certainly are not.  I am so proud of the entire Sangster community and the love and support being passed around.  We continue to look forward to the day where we can all be together again.

Thank you for all your time and support and please know how much we appreciate you.

Sincerely,

Allison Jankovich

Sign up for Paperless Progress Reports

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all elementary school parents to allow parents to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of School Year 2020-21. Choosing this option will not impact any mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for elementary school students and report cards for secondary students.  The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian selects “Go Paperless” for one of their students, the option will apply to all other siblings.

To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians must log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless".  All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports.

If you do not have a ParentVue Account, please contact our Registrar, Marian Hoelscher, at mthoelscher@fcps.edu.

Positivity Project

This year, Sangster will continue implementing the Positivity Project (P2). P2 is dedicated to empowering America’s youth to build strong relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in us all. Every 1-2 weeks, students learn about a new character strength.

It is easier than ever for Sangster families to access P2 resources this year! The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).

Positivity Project - Week of October 4

This week’s character strength is Open-Mindedness. You show this strength when you like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions. Open-minded individuals are often good listeners and called upon to provide a balanced viewpoint. Both listening and the ability to deliver reasonable and practical advice are marks of good friends and confidantes. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.

Next Week’s Positivity Project Focus: The Other People Mindset – being present and giving others my attention

Sangster Library e-Books

Did you know that Sangster students can access over a thousand new and popular e-Book titles?  Students simply log in to MackinVIA through their computer or other personal device using the website/app.  The weblink and video tutorials can be found on our Sangster Library homepage, which will require an FCPS Google login: https://tinyurl.com/sangsterlibrary.  All links can also be found on our public Sangster site under the "Library" tab.

Please contact our librarian, Nicole Oberdick at neoberdick@fcps.edu with any questions. Happy reading!

Fairfax County Public Library - LEAP Program

Effective October 1, all FCPS students (preK-12) can check out materials from the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL), even if they don’t have a traditional library card or a card has been blocked due to fines.

Under the Library Equity Access Pass program (LEAP), a partnership with FCPS and FCPL, students need only their name, not a physical library card, to check out three items at a time for six weeks each (no renewals). LEAP accounts are never charged fines or fees.

LEAP image

A student can have a LEAP account in addition to a standard library account. Standard accounts allow users to place holds on materials and access FCPL’s digital resources, such as eBooks and databases.

Families can apply for a standard account online and in library branches

FCPS Cares

The FCPS Cares Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can acknowledge our Sangster staff members.
