Justice Newsletter - October 4

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope that you are enjoying the beautiful weekend.

In the coming weeks, small groups of students will be returning to school. While we are working hard to finalize our logistics to ensure the safety of our students and staff, we are also very excited to serve some of our students. Our first group of students that we will host in-person on Monday’s will be English Language Learners. Our Special Education CAT B program will be coming back full time Tuesdays thru Fridays.

In preparation for the return of students, the custodians are thoroughly cleaning every classroom and common area. We are also doing much needed maintenance throughout the facility and have ordered a few outdoor benches.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email me or any member of our admin team.

Visual Arts Material Distribution – October 5th!

On October 5 between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm, we will be distributing a kit of art materials for students in all of our Visual Arts classes at Justice HS. If your student has any of the teachers listed below, they will have a kit to pick up on October 5th.

Mr. Agel

Ms. Augustine/Ms. Liu

Mr. Fitzgerald

Ms. Martin

Ms. Nast

Ms. Wallestad

These materials will be distributed from outside of Door 3 (to the far left of the main entrance) at the curb (see image below). Please stay in your car. Students (or parent/guardian) should hold up a piece of paper with the student’s complete name.  A staff member will then retrieve the student’s schedule and bring the materials out to the curb for their art class.  We ask that anyone coming to the school wear a mask.

Before coming to the school, please ask yourself the health questions above.  If you answer “yes” to any of the questions we will accommodate another way to get your materials.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Amy Nast (amnast@gmail.com).

Asynchronous Learning Day on Thursday, October 29th

Justice HS is hosting registered grade 11 students to participate in the PSAT exam on Thursday, October 29, 2020. We will be utilizing staff to facilitate the exam at Justice HS. October 29th will run asynchronously for all staff and students in all FCPS high schools. Students not participating in the PSAT are expected to log onto Google Classroom and complete the asynchronous work that is posted by their teachers for their Red Day classes (Periods 1, 3, 5, 7) during regular school hours (8:10 am – 2:55 pm). Attendance will be based on student engagement in their asynchronous work or participation in the PSAT exam. Grade 11 students who are participating in the PSAT exam are not expected to complete the asynchronous work for their classes that day.

In Person Tech Support at Justice

Students and families are encouraged to come to Justice HS, if there’s a tech issue that can’t be solved remotely.  In-person tech support is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-2:30pm.

Families can also call the tech hotline: 833-921-FCPS for additional support.

Important Information

Beginning of Year Forms: We understand how the beginning of the year can be overwhelming with forms. Here are some you can access now.

  • Emergency Care Form required for all returning FCPS students to review and update if needed.
  • Emergency Care Card required for students NEW to FCPS.
  • FCPSOn Computer Opt Out Form: Only for students who are not planning to use a school laptop. We highly recommend you use the FCPS laptop because all software and other applications will be loaded and accessible. Software used by FCPS and Justice HS cannot be loaded on personal devices.
  • Parental consent for digital resources - These are the apps and programs that our teachers will use to engage our students in the virtual world. Please go here for more information and follow the link to give your consent.

Students Rights and Responsibilities - Parents and guardians, please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr. After reviewing the information, please help us by filling out the fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form. The form must be filled out per student.

IB Exams and Fees Covered by FCPS (up to 6 exams) - The May 2021 IB Exams will match the traditional published exam descriptions. The fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Beyond the first 6, FCPS will bill you $119 for an IB test or $95 for an AP test.

AP Exam Opt-In - If your student wishes to take one or more AP exam as a non-enrolled student (not enrolled in corresponding AP course), they will need to register via their @fcpsschools.net email account on the AP EXAM OPT-IN SY 20-21 form and pay $95 per exam before the test is ordered.

Student Weekly Progress Reports - Due to the delayed school opening and virtual start, weekly progress reports to parents are now set to begin on Monday, October 5, 2020.  Please note this is a change from the original start date of September 21, 2020.

If you have registered for SIS ParentVUE and have a primary email address recorded in ParentVUE, you can receive your student’s Weekly Progress Report via email. This report provides a summary of your student’s grades for the current quarter. To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE account and verify that you have a primary email address within the system. It is listed under the “My Account” tab.

If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports, and click on “Update account.”  Once your email is confirmed, return to the “My Account” tab to activate and select your preferences for receiving these reports.  Emails will be sent according to your selected preferences.  Weekly Progress Reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email.  For additional help, refer to the quick reference guide for FCPS parents/guardians.

Parents can also access student grades through ParentVUE via the Grade Book tab.

Rolling Gradebook: Given the uncertainty of schedules and virtual learning for all students during the 2020-21 school year, our school has decided teachers will use a rolling (cumulative) gradebook. A rolling gradebook allows for progress towards a final mark that captures the total picture of student grades, regardless of length of quarter or number of assignments in each quarter. Acknowledging that the coming school year begins on a later start date and will have both synchronous and asynchronous learning, it is important to utilize a gradebook type that provides maximum flexibility and ensures equitable grading practices to meet the academic and social- emotional needs of all students.

A rolling gradebook is an approved gradebook type per Secondary Grading & Reporting Policy and numerous FCPS schools/teams/teachers already utilize a rolling gradebook.

To learn more details about a rolling gradebook to include how it will look in SIS Student/ParentVUE, please take time to review the following video. Teachers will communicate grading design and policies via the course syllabus. Students/parents are encouraged to reach out directly to the teacher with additional questions.

Attendance Procedures

If your student is unable to attend the live synchronous classes (your child is sick, has a doctor’s appointment, or is experiencing connectivity issues), please call our Attendance Line at 703-824-3920 (Spanish line is 703-824-8970).  You may also email us at Justicehigh.attendance@fcps.edu .  If you have a general question, you may also contact the main office at 703-824-3900.
