Reporting Student Absences

Twain uses a computerized attendance system which records absences and late arrivals for each period of the school day. In order to comply with mandatory attendance laws, we must keep accurate records of each child’s time spent in school. To assist families with reporting, attendance can now be reported by using our online attendance form in addition to calling Twain’s 24/7 attendance line at 703-313-3737. Visit Twain’s website for additional information.

Learning Seminar Overview for the week of October 5

Next week in Learning Seminar we will be discussing the role social media plays in our lives. We’ll ask students to consider how this much of their lives does social media take up, how it affects our relationships, and what are the highs and lows of our involvement. We’ll ask our students to review some statements about being online and decide whether they agree or disagree with them and then discuss as a class.

Conversation starter at home: Ask your child what a “red flag feeling” is (answer: this is when something happens on social media that makes a person feel uncomfortable/worried/sad/anxious). Next, ask them to walk you through the steps they would take if this were to happen to them. Ask them to recall all of the trusted adults they identified the previous week during our “Positive Relationships” lessons - these adults could be excellent sources of support. On Friday, students will complete a short survey, which upon completion, will provide our school support staff vital information about how best we can help our students better this year.

Virtual After School Program

Twain’s After School Program starts this Monday, October 5th. Look on Twain’s website for more information on the After School Program.

Teacher Absences

When teachers are absent during virtual learning for one to two days asynchronous activities will be provided in Schoology. Students will login to their Schoology course and a notice will be posted that the teacher is absent. On that notice, students are instructed to complete a form that will give them credit for attending the class that day. Students must complete that form and submit it to be marked present and prevent a call to parents/guardians reporting a period absence. If teachers are absent for three days or more a substitute teacher will be requested.

Digital Resources – Consent Required

At Twain Middle School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find Twain’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://twainms.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s administrator if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
