Majors Achieve and Thrive Together with Purpose and Pride!

A Message From Principal Rogers

We hope you all were able to “join” us for our virtual Back to School Night.  If you were not able to join, no need to worry - the site is still live and you can access all the information that was shared here.  This is one benefit to having an asynchronous section.  We’ve enjoyed visiting classrooms over the last few weeks.  Students are very actively engaged in the chat and more of them have been using their mics.  We ask that you help us encourage your children to use their mics and maybe even their cameras to help create more of a community feel for everyone.  We realize this can be more challenging for some students than others, and we are committed to working with you to ensure all students have a positive school experience.

Finally, we recognize the toll distance learning is having on students’ social lives so we encourage all students to take part in one of the over 70 clubs we have available.  This will be an opportunity for students to connect with like-minded peers and engage in something they enjoy outside of academics.

More information about clubs at MVHS can be found here.

MVHS 20-21 Grading Scale

Please review the documents here to become familiar with the FCPS Grading and Reporting Information

This video will help explain the 4.0 Grading Scale we are using.

Return to School Information

Beginning Oct 26, some students at MVHS will be rotating back to school for 1 to 4 days per week, depending on their curriculum.  MVHS will be reaching out to parents this week regarding how this plan affects your students.  Students returning for in-person instruction will be based on choices you made in the FCPS July survey. If you chose virtual instruction for your child, we will continue to honor that choice. If your circumstances have changed, we will try to accommodate your request based on staff and space availability.

October 10-2 Calendar

SIS Progress Reports

Due to the delayed school opening and virtual start, SIS weekly progress reports to parents are now set to begin on Monday, October 5, 2020.  Please note this is a change from the original start date of September 21, 2020.

If you have registered for SIS ParentVUE and have a primary email address recorded in ParentVUE, you can receive your student’s Weekly Progress Report via email.  For the 2020-21 school year, Weekly Progress Reports are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 5, 2020.  This report provides a summary of your student’s grades for the current quarter.  To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE account and verify that you have a primary email address within the system.  It is listed under the “My Account” tab.

If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports, and click on “Update account.”  Once your email is confirmed, return to the “My Account” tab to activate and select your preferences for receiving these reports.  Emails will be sent according to your selected preferences.  Weekly Progress Reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email.  For additional help, refer to the quick reference guide for FCPS parents/guardians.

Parents can also access student grades through ParentVUE via the Grade Book tab.

2020-21 AP/IB Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees

As part of the FCPS FY 2021 Approved Budget, FCPS is continuing to support Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test fees. As in previous years, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS.

Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).

FCPS and Mount Vernon High School encourage all students to take AP/IB tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s).  Steps to Opt-Out:

  1. Complete Opt-Out google form, available in the IB Information Community in Blackboard. This Opt-Out form will be available beginning October 5.
  2. Parent verification--Since the opt-out process requires parental signature, Mrs. McHugh, the IB/AP Coordinator will notify the parent/guardian listed on the Google form via email, and they will have to verify and validate their student’s Opt-Out request by sending a validation email response to Mrs. McHugh by October 20, 2020.

To assist in the decision-making process, students can request a report with their previous tests and current AP/IB course enrollment. Students who wish to view their SY 2021 Opt-Out report should email their request to Mrs. McHugh bfmchugh@fcps.edu starting October 2, 2020.  AP/IB students must make Opt-Out decisions by Wednesday, October 20, 2020, and parents will be billed in December 2020 for tests that exceed the six FCPS funded tests.  Students who qualify for the free and reduced-price meals program and have submitted the consent to share their free and reduced-price status will not be charged for these fees.

AP students who register for an AP exam after November 13th will be assessed a $40 late registration fee by the College Board.  AP students will have an opportunity to request to cancel an AP exam at no charge by March 1, 2021.

IB students who make changes to their registration (to drop or add) for an IB exam between November 13th and January 15th will be assessed a $40 late registration fee by the International Baccalaureate Organization.  After January 15, the fee is $150.
