Spring Hill ES Panther Press

Dear Spring Hill ES community:

We’ve been in school a month already! As we enter October, we are happy to report that the virtual learning is taking higher levels every day. You will notice that teachers have been using a lot of different programs to support students learning and assessments, including Imagine Learning and ST Math. Additionally, teachers have used iReady testing to assess student needs in reading and mathematics.  As we continue to plan for October, continue to communicate with the classroom teacher. I assure you, teachers want to hear good news about how your child is doing, as well as where they may need more support. Parents should work towards providing their child more independence with their learning, especially in the younger grades. It is amazing how quickly the young mind works and is able to control the mouse to get their information.

Please let us know how we’re doing and what information you would like for us to share in the newsletter. Together, we’ll continue to build our strong community.

Sincerely,

Mr. Rivera, Mrs. Briggs & Mr. Casey

 * Due to the ongoing pandemic, there are some adjustments to the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)  Level IV screening processes for the 2020-21 school year:

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) unfortunately will not be offered this school year. The CogAT test       requires multiple sessions and it is not possible to do safely. The one-time retest option for the  Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT) or CogAT test will not be available this school year. School resources are limited and there is not capacity to offer retests safely. There will be a      process for students without an abilities test on file to take the NNAT in December 2020. Local schools will determine which students    require the NNAT and will reach out to families to schedule safe and socially distanced testing.

Referrals for AAP level IV screening will be collected between September 8 through December 1, 2020. Referral forms are emailed to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) and principal at the local school. The email will count as a digital signature for the referral. Referrals will not be accepted past December 1, 2020. This is a hard deadline.

Tutoring

Hello Parents,

I am currently a senior at Langley High School. I went to Spring Hill from Kindergarten to the sixth grade!  I am reaching out today because, with Langley’s English Honor Society, I want to create a tutoring program partnering with Spring Hill Elementary’s ESOL program for your children. With online school being such a tough time for kids, I want to take this opportunity to make up for the lost time we have due to the pandemic. So far, we have around 100 kids in the honor society who excel in academics that can be great mentors.  The plan is to meet once a week for 30 minutes each semester. Each student will match with a tutor, and they will keep that tutor for a semester. If the child does not want to continue tutoring for the next semester, there is no obligation to continue. The student’s teacher will build lesson plans to help your student succeed with the curriculum! I forgot to mention the best part of this tutoring: it is absolutely free to join! All you have to do to start is fill out this google form (https://forms.gle/jRq7P5RWy5dVFAEGA), and we will contact you shortly! After graduating from Spring Hill, I want to give back to the community that gave me so much, and from my experience, a mentor helped me build a foundation that I carry with me to this day! If you have any questions, you can contact me at matthewchung2002@gmail.com or write your   concerns in the google form!

Sincerely,

Matthew Chung

Boys Scouts Flyer

 Hello!

We are Troop 55 of Great Falls, VA. Our program is for boys AND girls, ages 11-18. Our focus is to provide youth with fun and adventure as well as to instill lifelong values in them. Our main attraction is our memorable outings once per month ranging from canoeing to hiking to rock climbing. Additionally, we have regular community service for those interested in invasive species removal, trash collection, and much more. We also conduct (online) meetings every week on Wednesdays where we discuss outdoor topics and plan for our outings. During this strange time, we have taken measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to ensure the safety of our scouts and guests. We hope to see you soon!
