Cameron News You Choose 9/24/2020

Mr. Johnson's Back To School Night Message

Good Evening Cameron Families,

My name is Mr. Johnson and I am the school principal. Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! We are so happy that you have joined  us  this evening making history for our first Virtual Back to School Night. Back to School Night is one of the most important events of the school year. You will be hearing some very important information tonight about what to expect in the classroom and what your child will be learning. As you know, we are in the virtual setting which is bringing on many challenges for all of us but as partners we will be able to conquer and survive as we continue to keep the students at the center and focus.

There are three areas we need to commit to as we continue to build a successful this school year.

Flexibility- There will be some bumps in the road but with a growth mindset, understanding and empathy we will support each other to get through this unprecedent time.

Communication-This is going to be key as we assume positive intentions and communicate consistently and regularly with each other. Also, please make sure that you have signed up for news you choose which goes out every Wednesday evening and connect to Cameron’s Facebook, PTA Facebook page and twitter account.

Team work- We are not going to be able to survive if we do not work in teams. Collaboration and trust are huge, and we need your help. One way that you can help us now is letting your child complete assessments from their teacher on their own. Productive struggle is good but also the information helps the teacher plan for your child. If you are prompting and assisting the data will be skewed. Please ask questions if you have any wonderings. Some of you are new to Cameron and in general with your first child attending school. Remember we are in this together to support each other during this journey.

I want to give our teachers and staff a huge shout out! They have been working very diligently planning and implementing strategies across the curriculum utilizing google meets and blackboard collaborate ultra.  In many situations, we are learning by doing in the virtual setting which is exciting but also can be stressful. However, the teachers are passionate about their work and constantly advocates for  students.

In closing just know that you are not alone, and we will support each other. Please let Mrs. Tkach, the Assistant Principal and I know what you need. We are committed to make sure our families and students have a successful school year.

Thank you,

Mr. Johnson, Principal

Back to School Night Grade Levels Presentations

Universal Screener Assessment

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students.

The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive screening again in the winter and/or in the spring.

You will access the assessment online, from home.  Your child’s teacher will schedule the test date and time.

  • Do not have your child log in to the test before being directed by the teacher.
  • Only have your child take the test during the testing sessions, it is okay if they do not finish in one sitting.
  • Do not assist your child in answering any of the questions or problems.  You should only help with computer issues such as the headphones not working.
  • Some of the questions will be too easy for your child and some will be too hard, it is very important that you do not help your child or we will not know how to best help your child in the classroom.

Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at this webpage: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33718. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s test coordinator.

This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for ES students and report cards for secondary students. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless" All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian has already selected “Go Paperless” for their secondary student, the option will now apply to any ES siblings as well.

Parent Approval Needed For Digital Resources

    per

At Cameron Elementary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://camerones.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
