Coates Parent Academy

Reading specialist Carole Puckett is running excellent trainings for parents next week as part of her Creating Reading Routines at Home series.  This is a great way for parents to learn about reading levels and ask their children specific questions about their reading to help boost comprehension.

Monday, 9/21 – 3rd & 4th Grade

Tuesday, 9/22 – Kindergarten

Wednesday, 9/23 – 5th & 6th Grade

Thursday, 9/24 – 1st & 2nd Grade

Use this link to attend.  No RSVP required.

More Parent Academy classes are coming.  These are free, optional opportunities for all Coates parents and guardians.  They are not intended to add more to your plate.  They exist only to help.  Please take advantage if you can.

PTA Meeting on Sept. 22 at 7:00

Bus Delivery of Bundles - Sept. 30

Each month while school is closed, our staff will be delivering bundles of school assignments or materials to students at their bus stops.  Our next delivery will be on the morning of Wed., Sept. 30.  A detailed schedule with times for each bus stop will be sent out soon.

Bundles of materials are intended to support learning in addition to the work assigned by teachers in Google Classroom and other online sources.  Families who cannot come to their bus stop for bundle delivery may pick up at school any day from Sept. 22-25 between 8:30-4:00.

Appropriate Help at Home

While FCPS is engaged in virtual learning, all teachers and staff should not allow third party visitors into online lessons without prior approval from the principal and with advance notice.  This is similar to school rules during in-person schooling whereby visitors, including parents, would not physically come to classrooms without the aforementioned approval and scheduling.  This is to protect the confidentiality of all students and to ensure that the learning environment is not disrupted.

That being said, we appreciate that parents have been so helpful to their children as they learn from home. Very few young children are independent in using the tools in BBCU or completing many assignments.  We know that without parent help, we would have significantly greater challenges.  Thank you.  In alignment with the FCPS guidelines, we expect that parents will not intentionally or actively enter their voice or commentary into live lessons with groups of students.  This would be considered an intrusion into the class.  If any specific guidance is needed on how to support your children at home and not interfere in the learning of others, your child’s teacher will advise.  Thanks for your attention to this point as we work together to deliver a new, unprecedented online program while maintaining standards.
