Hello Haycock...9.18.2020

Dear Parents,

Fall is in the air! We hope you and your family are getting out to enjoy the seasonal activities. Dr. Beaty’s first official day is September 28th, but she is already preparing for her arrival and taking over the mantle of the principal.  The staff is excited to welcome her to the Haycock family.

As you know, we have an extremely talented and dedicated staff who work earnestly to provide your children with an appropriately challenging and motivating school experience. Meeting the students’ needs is central to everything they do.  The amount of time that they take in planning their virtual and synchronous lessons, responding to parents’ questions, providing support and enrichment activities for students, and creating a positive learning climate for the school is unlike anything we have witnessed.  There positive can-do attitude is contagious.  Please take time to recognize their efforts for all that they do in order to educate your children.

The article this week focuses on looking at the glass half full in education in leaning in a virtual environment.  We often focus on all of the negatives but the article tweaks out some of the positive outcomes for our children and teachers.

A Silver Lining to the Year’s Disruptions?

In this Education Week article, Sarah Sparks reports on ideas for moving beyond the current crisis and innovating for long-term improvement and equity. She quotes Linda Darling-Hammond (Stanford University), who believes that today’s massive disruption in K-12 schools could create something of an education renaissance. “We’re in a moment in our country right now where the most important modus operandi is inventing and sharing,” she says. “You know people have to invent ways to do things they haven’t done before, and then they need to share those things with others and they need to be able to access what others are sharing about their inventions.” Some avenues for long-term improvement:

  • Close the digital divide.
  • Strengthen distance and blended learning.
  • Address homelessness, housing instability, and food insecurity.
  • Leverage more-adequate and equitable school funding.
  • Establish community schools and wraparound supports.
  • Provide expanded learning time.
  • Redesign schools for stronger relationships.
  • Assess students’ academic and social-emotional needs.
  • Ensure supports for social and emotional learning, including mental health needs.
  • Emphasize authentic, culturally responsive learning.
  • Prepare educators for reinventing school.

Digital Resources at Haycock Elementary School

This year, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: Adopted Digital Resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year in each grade level.

To provide your parental consent for each student in your family, please follow this link and follow the provided directions.  Provide consent.
