Wolf News September 9

Principal's Message

p

Dear Parents,

What a fantastic first two days of this new school year!  Our theme this year is We Rise By Lifting Others!  Today, I myself was having a moment where the tasks that I needed to accomplish felt overwhelming.  I knew I needed a break and visiting the classrooms virtually  would be the answer to changing my mindset.  It certainly was FUN and UPLIFTING to hear our kids converse with one another and their teachers.  I am proud of how quickly both students and teachers are building trusting relationships with the heart at the center.  We can do this!  Rest easy because your child(ren) are in great hands with our staff.  I hope all of you continue to take care of yourself and that these times find you in good health.  Let me know what I can do for you!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Important Technology Information: Action Required

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS!  Action Required

At Oak Hill ES our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.

We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

FCPS Parent Technology Help Desk

h

Fairfax County Public Schools has a Parent Technology Help Desk. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.

Family Choice: Week Two Plan

The Oak Hill Specialists have enjoyed the first few days of meeting with students during the optional Family Choice.  They have planned some more fun activities for next week which can be accessed here.  Students will access these activities by logging onto Blackboard and finding the Oak Hill Specialists course. From there they will click on the BBCU sessions tab, and find our classroom.

Mental Health and Wellness Conference

This year FCPS will continue to partner with INOVA and Kaiser Permanente to host the 7th Annual Mental Health and Wellness Conference. The conference will feature multiple keynote speakers who will address social emotional learning and resiliency. Virtual sessions will be offered September 14th-October 3rd. The kickoff panel will be hosted by NBC 4’s Eun Yang. Registration is available at this website.

Additionally, Our Minds Matter will be hosting a student summit for the Mental Health and Wellness Conference. Students may register here.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Parents and guardians, please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr.  After reviewing the information, fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using this link we have provided.  The form must be filled out one time per student.

Attendance

e

The Virginia Department of Education requires all schools to take attendance during virtual learning this school year.  FCPS must take attendance Monday – Friday.  Attendance is expected during all synchronous instruction.  However, if your child is not able to attend synchronously, please contact your teacher and the attendance line (see below) to indicate that your student is reviewing the video recordings and completing work asynchronously.

If a student is not in attendance during the day and neither the teacher or front office has heard from the parent/guardian, the student will be marked “unverified” and the parent/guardian will receive an electronic message in the evening.  If the parent/guardian does not contact the school office to update attendance, this will be recorded as an unexcused absence for the student.  Furthermore, if a student is ill, or cannot participate synchronously/asynchronously for the duration of a school day for any other reason, families should contact the school by submitting the online attendance form on the Oak Hill ES website or by calling the 24/7 attendance line at 703-467-3535 (also listed on the website).

It is so important to us that each student is able to fully access the lessons provided by the teachers, either synchronously with the class or asynchronously if necessary.  Please contact school counselors, Kimberly Gallagher (kagallagher1@fcps.edu) or Christy Ryder (clryder@fcps.edu), to provide support with any challenges you might be facing.  You can also call the main office at 703-467-3500 to ask for one of them to call you.  Thank you for your support!

A Note from the Oak Hill Clinical Team

Welcome back Oak Hill Families to the 2020-2021 school year!  As always, we are here to support all Oak Hill students and families. We have a comprehensive Parent Resource Guide on the Oak Hill website that may be helpful during this time.  Please reach out to any member of the Clinical Team if you would like assistance navigating these resources or if you (the parent/guardian) would like to set up a mental wellness consultation.  The consultations are not intended for mental health emergencies and if an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911.

Our school counselors are looking forward to visiting classrooms these first weeks of school to share the School Counseling Virtual Guidance Site for activities, fun ideas, and coping strategies including a new section called the Wolf Pack Relaxation Room. Please note, students must first log in to their fcpsschools.net account to access the site.  We are looking forward to a great year of learning!
