Virtual Orientation

With the new Virtual Learning Environment comes new terms and vocabulary. This year, we are holding our first "Virtual Orientation" on Thursday, September 3 (see below for specific times). This orientation will be similar to the traditional Open House.  Teachers will be meeting with the entire class at one time (virtually).  Parents are welcome to join.  The time together will be focused on:

  • Building relationships and community
  • Learning how virtual learning will work: logging into students’ FCPS accounts to access virtual classroom links, and using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, and Google Meet
  • Ensuring students are prepared for a successful first day of school and school year.

The link to the Virtual Orientation will be found in your child's gmail account. For students in K-3, the link should arrive in their gmail account by Tuesday.  Students in 4-6 already have their link (It's the same one you used for the the Meet & Greet). This link will be used to connect with your classroom teacher for instruction.

Back to School Night

In addition to the Virtual Orientation, grade level teams will be holding a Virtual Back to School Night.  This is an opportunity for parents to learn about:

  • Curriculum
  • Review of attendance, schedules, procedures, and routines.
  • Grading and assessments.

Teachers will send a link for BTSN to parents.  See below for specific dates/times.

Easing In...

Virtual Learning is new to all of us.  As a school staff, we have had many conversations about how to best approach this style of instruction and learning with our students.  We want to provide engaging, fun, and educationally rich instruction for all of our students, while maintaining a healthy balance of time away from the screen. The county has been very directive in the amount of "live" instruction that we must provide, and thus, our master schedule reflects this expectation.  Nevertheless, we understand that just like training for a marathon, we must pace ourselves and build up our stamina.  Our teachers will be easing into this schedule to best meet the needs of our students and help them successfully transition to the virtual platform.

Parents, We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Oakton Elementary, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://oaktones.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.

We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.

Please reach out to if your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Technology/Support for Families

Parent Technology Help Desk

On Monday, August 24, FCPS launched a toll-free Parent Technology Help Desk to assist families with technology issues. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered 7 a.m.-11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS has Parent Information Phone Lines available in eight languages to assist with general questions about FCPS.)
