Supporting Return to School Program

The new Supporting Return to School program has been developed by the county’s Office for Children in hopes of ensuring that all families have equitable access to the services they need to support children’s virtual learning. Children in kindergarten through sixth grade may attend this program from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and complete their virtual learning, as well as participate in other programming throughout the day. Although Oak Hill is not one of the locations for this program, families may apply for their child(ren) to attend a program at another local school. FCPS Launches New Parent Technology Help Desk, Readies Students and Families for Virtual Learning

help

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, Fairfax County Public Schools has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk.  The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.

A Message from the Band and Strings Teachers

m

Welcome to Oak Hill Elementary! We are the band and strings teachers (Teri Davis, band, Alexandra Geers, strings) and we are so excited to be able to continue providing instruction on band and strings instruments. Even though it will be a virtual experience to start, we are both committed to making sure that students will have everything they need to be successful in learning their instrument this year. We would like the opportunity to meet with parents to discuss our programs, what it will look like for a virtual start for each grade level (4th grade strings, 5th/6th band and strings), and answer any questions that you may have. We will be hosting a parent information night on Wednesday, September 2 at 7:00pm. We are looking forward to meeting as many parents as possible and am very excited to meet all your children and start making music with them this year. To access the meeting, click here

Registration for band and strings will be open until Friday, September 11 and classes will start the following week. Please click here to register. If you registered in the spring, you will receive an email from Mrs. Davis or Ms. Geers to confirm and provide more information. Again, we are very excited to start this school year and hope to see many of you on September 2.

New Technology Application Videos

As students prepare for the virtual start to the school year, parents are encouraged to learn some of the technology applications their children and classrooms may be using this fall by viewing videos posted here. The list will be continuously updated.

This week, three new videos have been added to the Virtual Learning Tips and Tricks playlist on YouTube.

Locating Assignments in Google Classroom: Courtney White, education specialist, created this video to show you where to find your student assignments in Google Classroom. Log into your student's fcpsschools.net account to access Google Classroom.

Padlet Tutorial: Padlet is an online bulletin board for students to post and collaborate. Jenn Choumil, biology teacher at McLean HS, created this resource for parents to better understand how the app works.

Flipgrid Screencast: The Deer Park ES school-based technology specialist is back to demonstrate how to use Flipgrid to make a screencast. It's a fun way for students to share their work with the teacher and classmates. Parental permission is required for students to use this app.
