Hello Woodley Hills Family,

This week you can expect welcome phone calls from your child’s teacher.  The teacher will be calling to say hello and to gather a little information from you. In addition, he or she will be scheduling a video call with you and your child. During the video call the teacher will make sure you can log into  Blackboard 24/7 and familiarize you with Blackboard Collaborate,  the video part of your child’s classroom this fall. This will also be a time for you to meet the other staff members who will be working in your child’s room.  These two calls will be what have traditionally been our Open House and Orientation.  Please look out for either an unknown or blocked number this week and answer. The teachers will be calling using a variety of methods and apps, so the call may not appear to be coming from Woodley Hills. I moved this  up

In addition, we will be sending out a time for students to log on before school starts to say hello to their classmates. It isn’t our annual Family Picnic, but it will be a time for some fun!

FCPS 24-7: Parent View

photo

In order for you to stay as completely involved and knowledgeable about your child' instruction, we strongly encourage you to activate your Parent View in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard).

You will be able to see the learning activities the teacher has assigned and you can access weCare@school to update Emergency Care Information.  You will need to have a Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account in order to login to FCPS 24-7 Learning: Parent View. If you do not have a Student Information System (SIS) Parent account, you can register for an account online. An activation key will be sent to you to complete your registration, along with the simple steps to set up your account. Your username and password for the Student Information System(SIS) and FCPS 24-7 Learning: Parent View will be the same.

Emergency Care Forms

Although we are in a virtual setting, it is still important for you to complete the Health Information Form and the Emergency Care form for your child.  You can print out these required forms and drop them off when you pick up your child’s laptops or supplies.  You can also submit the forms online by going to your FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) account to access the weCare@school (weCare) module.  https://www.fcps.edu/resources/parent-communication-overview/wecareschool

School Supplies

Going school supply shopping is often exciting for children, but we all realize it can be an expense.  This year is challenging financially for many people and I am excited to share with you that through generous donations from the FCPS Foundation, KidsRFirst and others, each child at Woodley Hills and throughout FCPS will be receiving free supplies!   Below you will find the items that will be provided to your child(ren).  In addition, WHES will be sending home books, counters, and other items that can help our students during virtual instruction.  We also hope you held onto your child's reading and writing journals like we suggested.  The stories they wrote last year can provide them with a starting place this year. We will send out a message when the materials are ready for pick up.  Unfortunately, not all of them are available now so we will not be able to pass them out during laptop distribution.

Breakfast and Lunch

If your child has received free or reduced price breakfast and lunch in the past, we are reminding you that an application must be completed each year for them to continue.  For those who may now be facing some financial challenges, you may want to consider applying for the additional support.  It is important that families apply so that when we return to the building, every student can be provided a free breakfast and lunch.  Also, if  your child qualifies, he or she can access other benefits such as reduced fees for internet services, technology or classes.  In order to receive the additional benefits, you must complete the Consent to Exchange Information (Section 4) of the application.  You can apply online in English or Spanish.  Also, if you want a paper copy you can print one at the following by going to the Food and Nutrition page on the FCPS website.  If you need assistance or a paper copy of the application, call the school at 703-799-2000.

Several staff members have been calling to schedule appointments for families to pick up laptops and mifi devices, if needed.  We are working to ensure that distribution goes smoothly.  Please make sure to arrive at your appointment time. You will not need to get out of the car unless asked to do so by staff. We are having a drive-through distribution. You will not need to get out of your car unless asked to do so by staff Please do not come to the school without having an appointment.  We want to honor everyone’s time and make this as safe as possible for everyone.  If you have questions, missed the call or have a problem with the laptop you currently have, please contact the school at 703-799-2000. Our goal is to address any problems and make any needed repairs before the start of school on September 8.

As a reminder, your child’s school issued laptop will need county updates so that it will work properly.  We are asking that sometime this week you:

  • Plug the laptop into an outlet.
  • Turn the laptop on and let it boot up.
  • Login to ensure it connects to the internet at that location.
  • Launch Google Chrome and visit the FCPS website to ensure the internet is connected on the computer.
  • Leave the laptop on and connected to the internet for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, the laptop may be shut down.
