FHES Summer Update: 8/16/2020

Principals' Message

Good afternoon Freedom Hill families,

It is hard to believe that our students return to us in only 23 days! Our teachers returned on Friday and are so excited to see their new students this fall.  Tomorrow will be our big kickoff with staff.

In today’s newsletter, we ask that you carefully read and attend to new action items that will streamline our return to school. In addition, we would like to share opportunities to connect with your child's teachers and grade level before school. You will have TWO opportunities to connect with your child’s teacher before school begins, and then an additional evening to connect after the year has begun:

  • 1:1 Virtual Conversations
    • Teachers will begin reaching out to families in the next week to set up 10-minute family chats and to share relevant information, including the daily schedule.
  • Back to School Night - Part 1 - Wednesday, 9/2 6:00 - 8:00pm
    • This will serve as a virtual orientation: how to access assignments, schedules, and their Blackboard course.
  • Back to School Night - Part 2 - Thursday, 9/24 6:00 - 8:00pm
    • Typical BTSN topics - curriculum, school/classroom policies, addressing frequently asked questions

We understand that this year is challenging and hope that these opportunities to connect will ease any anxiety or uncertainty about what to expect from the school year ahead.  We are lucky to have a truly committed and hardworking team here at Freedom Hill and are eager to partner with you to meet your child’s needs and problem solve the challenges this year may bring.  We are tremendously excited for school to begin and hope you are, too.  As always, please reach out if there is something we can do to help your family during this time.

Wishing you all the best,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

Technology Distribution Plan

Our school staff are busily preparing for community laptop distribution dates from 10:00-3:30pm on August 31 - September 3. We will send a link next week for parents to make appointments to check out a laptop and pick up school supplies with their child.

The Fairfax County School Board has provisioned a laptop for every 5th and 6th grader, and Freedom Hill has prepared adequate supply for all students in grades K-4 to also receive a laptop if needed by the family. In the back-to-school survey, parents had the opportunity to indicate their family's need for a laptop. If you did not indicate need at the time, but would like to be added to our distribution list, please complete this Google Form. We encourage families to have one device for each learner!

We look forward to providing appointment signup next week. A big thank you to Tim Scesney and Craig Fenton for their ongoing efforts readying a plethora of devices.

Virtual School Supply List

This year, many parents utilized our school supply lists to make purchases for the school year. We appreciate this and hope all supplies purchased will be relevant this year when we return to the building. FH teachers have added some additional optional materials that will be helpful during distance learning. You can access those grade level lists here. Freedom Hill has purchased several items for all students - personal white boards, markers, erasers, pencils, pencil sharpeners, math/reading charts for K-2, etc. These will be available for you to pickup on laptop distribution days as needed.

If you ordered SPROUT supplies through the PTA, these will be available for pick up later in August, most likely during our laptop distribution days. More information will be forthcoming.

Activating Your SIS Parent Account

The SIS (Student Information System) Parent Account is an online tool parents can use to access information about their child’s attendance, report cards, discipline incidents, health information, and more.

Your secure SIS Parent Account offers you the ability to use one username/password to login to both the SIS Parent Account.

Using the SIS Parent account, parents will also be able to view school information, including teacher e-mail addresses, the FCPS calendar, and emergency contact information. Visit the FCPS website and use the search function and keywords SIS Parent Overview for more information.

Newly enrolled parents will receive an activation key by email.

If you have previously activated your account with the activation key but are unable to login to your account, you may need to reset your password on the SIS Parent Account login page (https://sisparent.fcps.edu):  Select the “Forgot Password” button.  Your username is the primary email address you have on file with us in our Student Information System.  More information is available here.

Please take action now to ensure your account is active, so that you won’t miss a beat once we introduce our new learning platform.

School Counselor Transition

We are excited to wish Ms. Campbell the best on her transition as a full-time counselor at her other school, and to welcome "Miss B." to Freedom Hill as our new part-time school counselor!

From The PTA

Well we've had a bunch of ups and downs in all the decisions leading up to the beginning of school. Your PTA has been meeting over the summer planning as best we can for this year and thinking creatively when it comes to activities, budget and where we can make the most impact. Be sure to stay connected on the Freedom Hill ES Community group on Facebook!

If you missed the recent Q&A session with Dr. Z and would like to listen to the recording, it is here with password: 9HhUht+j.
