Lanier MS - August 14, 2020

from principal

Hello, Eagle Families,

The teachers have returned to work, and that means lots of information is being prepared to share with families. So, grab a snack and your calendar and happy reading!

SUPPLY LIST

To help your child establish their own “work from home” space, here are the items you may want to have on hand:

  • earbuds/headphone with microphone compatible with FCPS device,
  • glue sticks,
  • erasers, pencils, pencil sharpener,
  • box of markers (8 count),
  • colored pencils,
  • scissors,
  • paper (to use especially in math classes for solving problems; this could be a spiral notebook)
  • ruler
  • At this time, you may elect to help your child get organized with an even day and an odd day binder.
  • paper, composition books, pocket folders, binders, ruler

When we return to face to face instruction, we may have alterations.

EAGLE FEST 2020—VIRTUAL STYLE

We are excited to announce our plans for a virtual event that will help you as families know what to expect at Lanier for our school year start. You will get an invitation to join on your assigned night closer to the event. However, mark your calendar: 8th grade will be on Wednesday, Aug. 26 from 6-8:00 PM; 7th grade will be on Thursday, Aug. 27 from 6-8:00 PM. During the event, you will be able to:

  • Learn how the school day will operate and how your child will access courses.
  • Find out ways you can help your child organize their space and laptop bookmarks for a successful day each day.
  • Meet many of the LMS teachers as they interact during presentations.
  • Meet your child’s teachers for science, English and social studies as you interact with your new team!
  • Have time to understand how special programs will be delivered. (For parents of Exceptional Learners with IEPs, check out this FCPS website.)

ORIENTATION DAY: The Chance for Your Child to Run through a Mock Schedule

On Thursday, September 3, from 9-10:45 AM, your child will go through a schedule of classes for 10 minutes per class. They will visit periods: 1, 3, 5, & 7 for a sample of Tuesday & Thursday classes. Then, they will “go” to periods 2, 4, 6, & 8 to meet their Wednesday and Friday teachers. In each class, the teachers will conduct tech checks and give a little more information to help set your children at ease for Life at Lanier. Please be sure they have their laptops picked up from LMS by this date and that they have completed all steps on the handout they get with the computer to set up their Google Classroom. Students will be given individual invitations to EACH of their classes (8 email links on one thread) from Blackboard Collaborate. This invitations will NOT be sent out until AFTER Eagle Fest.

FORMS

Great news! All of those wonderful paper forms you know and love from years gone by are now going to be available and must be completed electronically. More information will be shared with families on next week's edition.

LAPTOP DISTRIBUTION

This past week, we saw almost 250 students and families as they came by to pick up laptops! We still have 950 left to distribute! (Special thanks to the family who delivered Dunkin’ Donuts to the staff members helping in the pouring rain. It was a very “sweet” gesture!) As always, if you need assistance with laptops and are a family who elects to walk to LMS, we will make accommodations at Door 1.

Here are a few things to remember:

  • Your child (rising 8th grade) MUST have turned in their laptops and chargers from last year. IF you have not done so already, bring it that day.
  • Your child MUST be in the car with you.
  • Your child MUST know their password from last year. (If they forgot, please email kfowens@fcps.edu to request a reset BEFORE you come to LMS.)
  • You MUST come during the 15 minute window you sign up for—not any earlier. We are purposefully staggering traffic so you can be the nearest the school to access our FCPS network that is required for the initial student login.
  • You MUST have your child turn on the computer and login at LMS before you leave. This should take less than one minute once we give you the laptop.
  • You MAY print the attached sign up directions( 8th Grade Distribution Letter.pdf ) to use in the car, or you CAN get a printed copy at the pick-up.
  • You WILL be entering Lanier from the Jermantown entrance and driving the reverse way (so the school is on your left) through the car loop. (Again, you need to be close to the school while maximizing how many cars are in the area at one time.)
  • Your child WILL have to go home and sign up for their grade level Google classroom to receive school opening updates.

Thank you for your continued partnership!
