Hello Woodley Hills Family,

We hope that this message finds everyone healthy and doing well!  Although we will not be starting instruction until September 8, 2020, we want to welcome everyone back now as we will be involving each of you in the preparation over the next few weeks.   We want you to know how excited we are to begin this upcoming school year because no matter whether we are in the building or virtual we are still the Woodley Hills Family!

A virtual start may not be optimal in every person’s mind, but as adults, we can work together to make this the best experience we can provide for our children.  Please know that we have reflected on the challenges we experienced as well as those that were shared with us and we have been developing solutions. In fact, the Woodley Hills staff has been working since June to prepare for this upcoming school year. Teachers and staff have been learning different ways to ensure the children can share their thinking and interact more with their peers.   As always we will integrate our character traits and social emotional supports throughout the lessons and the day.  We will continue to challenge our students to reach their full potential and become positive change agents in this world.  We will also continue to teach them to not only own but advocate for their own learning. Now more than ever, our students, staff and parents need to work together to ensure to students have a voice and are offered the best virtual experience possible!   We will do everything in our power to encourage and support them while making this a successful year!

Schedule

Our school hours are from 9:00am until 3:30pm. For your general planning purposes, lunch time will be from 12-12:30 followed by a break. The break will allow some flexibility for parents before students are expected to be back in class. We are aware that so many things can happen in 30 minutes. Family choice time will be from 2:45-3:30  We are working on developing a schedule that has several small group times so lessons can better support students' individual needs and provide more time for targeted instruction. This should also allow for screen breaks and an opportunity for students to work more independently.  We are hoping this will support students who will be with childcare providers and allow parents to complete their own work or assist their other children. We will share a detailed schedule soon.

Class Assignments

We are making every effort to assign children based on in-person or virtual preferences. During the week of August 24 your child’s teacher(s) will be calling to introduce him or herself and to get to know your child and the support you may need.  They will also be asking questions about your technology needs and make sure that you and/or your child can successfully login to all platforms being used. In addition, staff will be organizing virtual times for the students to get to know one another before school begins. As with every year, class assignments may have to change due to student enrollment.

photo

Technology needs for all students will be fulfilled between August 24th and September 2nd. Staff will be making phone calls during the next couple of weeks to set up appointments to check out laptops and mifi devices.  If your student is going into grades 1-4 and you already have a school-provided laptop, you will not be contacted.  If there a problem with the laptop you currently have, please contact the school at 703-799-2000 so the problem can be addressed and any repairs needed can be completed before the start of school on September 8.

Preparing for the New School Year

To help prepare students for a successful a virtual start to the school year, parents are asked to ensure children have the tools and connectivity that will be needed.  If you currently have an FCPS issued laptop at home, please help your school’s technology team prepare devices to receive county updates by doing the following once per week until school starts:

  • Plug the laptop into an outlet.
  • Turn the laptop on and let it boot up.
  • Login to ensure it connects to the internet at that location.
  • Launch Google Chrome and visit the FCPS website to ensure the internet is connected on the computer.
  • Leave the laptop on and connected to the internet for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, the laptop may be shut down.

In the next few weeks, students will receive learning updates that will include information from your child’s classroom teacher and the daily instructional schedule for distance
