Ravens' Nest- July 31, 2020

Upcoming Events

  •  Tuesday, September 8th- First Day of School

Message from our Principal

August 14th will be my first anniversary at Ravensworth Elementary School. When I walked through our front door that day, I would have never imagined what we would experience as a school community. We know the next six months may be just as unpredictable.  As difficult and uncertain as this time has been, we are thankful to be on this journey with you.  As announced last week, all students will begin the school year virtually on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. We will need until later in August to share a firm plan with you.

To ensure all students have the necessary tools for virtual learning, FCPS will be providing laptops for all PreK-6 students. Ravensworth is already diligently preparing them for distribution, which will occur in a similar format to our student item pick-up in May/June.

A laptop distribution schedule will be coming out with specific information in the next few weeks. We hope to begin the distribution the week of August 24th. Although families are not required to take an FCPS device and can opt-out, we strongly recommend you accept an FCPS device for the ease of use it will provide your child and the access to programs that will not be available on personal devices. The laptops are owned by FCPS and are being loaned to students.  Before your child receives their computer, please take some time to discuss with them the importance of keeping their machine clean and usable and adhering to FCPS digital citizenship principles.  You will be receiving a link to the computer loaner acceptance form in coming weeks that each family will need to sign.  In addition, on this form there will be some guidance for parents regarding the responsibilities that goes with using the device.

The number of devices on your home internet during this time might impact the speed of your internet connection and therefore your child’s ability to smoothly participate in classes.  Please contact your providers to work with you regarding this issue.  While the county has purchased more MIFI devices, the priority will be given to families without any internet access.  Please contact Mr. Bourjaily at PJBourjaily@fcps.edu if you do not have internet access and need a MIFI device.  We have not been promised by FCPS any MIFIs for families that already have internet access.

After your child picks up their laptop, we will be setting up times, before the school year begins, for your child to test their machine and ensure that they are connecting to the platforms that we will be using for distance learning. We will be sharing more details in the weeks to come.

While we recognize this is not the start of the school year we had hoped for back in June, we want you to know we are committed to making your student’s online learning experience successful and are doing everything we can on our part to prepare for this and support you in the future.  More information forthcoming in future weeks.  Stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

A Message from Lake Braddock Middle School for our Rising 7th Graders

Dear Parents/Guardians of a Rising 7th Grader,

We are happy to share that our Jump Start site is now up and running!  Since we cannot all be together this summer for our traditional Jump Start Program, we wanted to create a virtual opportunity for students to explore more about Lake Braddock and receive some helpful tips for a successful middle school experience.  To access the Jump Start site, CLICK HERE, or visit the main page of the Lake Braddock website and look for the Jump Start announcement (Coming Soon!).

Be sure to check back in August as we will be offering virtual opportunities for students to connect!  Make sure you are registered to receive our News You Choose so you will know when these opportunities become available.

As we learn more about the opening of school this year, we will continue to update our Jump Start site as needed.

Sincerely,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D. Principal, Lake Braddock Secondary School
