PRINCIPAL DAUGHERTY

Dear Beech Tree Families,

This past week, Dr. Brabrand proposed and the Fairfax County School Board approved a full virtual start to the beginning of the upcoming school year. In the communication Dr. Brabrand sent out to the community he shared the following:

The online instruction model will be the same one offered to families in our recent survey. For distance learning, our first priority is to provide access and equity in the learning experience for each of our students. We understand that there are significant academic and social/emotional challenges to our students learning remotely. We have strengthened our digital learning model so that we can provide an even more rigorous and engaging virtual learning program with greater connections for all students at all grade levels.

Students will receive virtual instruction 5 days per week. The week will include 4 days of live, face-to-face online instruction with teachers Tuesday through Friday. Mondays will be used for independent learning with some students identified for teacher-directed specialized instruction/intervention.

  • At the elementary level, students will receive real-time, interactive instruction Tuesday through Friday.
  • The elementary day will also consist of additional small group instruction, intervention supports, and independent learning activities assigned to students.
  • Middle and high school students will follow an A/B block schedule.
  • Student work will be graded, and attendance is required.
  • Teachers will have planning time on Mondays and will provide intervention supports for selected students that we hope can be provided in-person.
  • Individual schools will communicate with parents regarding schedules and other information to prepare for online learning.

As we move forward, our decision-making will remain guided by safety, equity, science, and the many needs of our stakeholders in the midst of a dangerous global pandemic.

Laptops were purchased for all Middle School students and 5th graders at Title I Schools, like ours. During the next month, laptops will be collected from soon-to-be 5th and 6th graders at our Justice Pyramid elementary schools. All Glasgow Middle School students will be receiving new laptops, once they are imaged and ready for them, as will our 5th graders. In order to be assist with this process, Beech Tree will be collecting laptops from those students who were in 4th or 5th grade during the 2019-2020 school year on Tuesday, August 4th from 9am to Noon at the front of the school. We will place a table for the laptops outside our front doors and a box for you to place the laptop chargers.

Once laptops are ready to be loaned out, we will contact you regarding the distribution of laptops for our students in Preschool – 5th grade, prior students’ first day of school, which is Tuesday, September 8th. We will also mail out teacher and class assignments to you prior to the start of the school year.

In the meantime, if you still need assistance with internet access, please complete this form to be loaned a MiFi devices from Fairfax County Public Schools:

This may be a start of a school year like never before, but we are still #BeechTreeFamily and we will work together to support every child and every teacher!

This is our last week of Summer Learning. Please remember to have your children check in with teachers during their office ours for a quick reconnection. Our staff love to catch up with our students!
