Message from Mr. DeSmyter

Dear Shrevewood Family,

As you know by now, it was decided at the School Board Work Session earlier this week that we will begin the 2020 – 2021 school year virtually for all staff and students. I would like to reassure our Shrevewood community that we are focusing on building on the successes of distance learning in the spring to create a quality virtual learning environment for all students.

September 8th will arrive soon! We cannot wait to reconnect with our amazing students and families! Now that we know everyone will start the year virtually, we are planning ways we can begin building relationships and are always looking for creative ideas and feedback – please reach out with any virtual suggestions.  Our wonderful PTA has already provided Tylea and I with some wonderful ideas about how we could enhance our virtual opening of 2020-2021 school year. I am looking forward to seeing our community Monday at our Parent Coffee.

Members of our Professional Development team will be available with Tylea and I to give our families an overview of Shrevewood’s approach to distance learning to start the school year. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions. We look forward to seeing everyone Monday afternoon.

Have a wonderful and relaxing weekend!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter

Principal

Please use this link to join us on Monday, July 27th from 4:30-5:30 for an information session on updates to this school year.  We are excited to share the great things Shrevewood is planning and preparing to make sure that we will have a successful start to our virtual school year!  We look forward to seeing you there!

Yearbook pick up

Shrevewood Yearbooks have finally arrived! After multiple delays from our vendor, we are excited that our amazing 2019-2020 yearbooks are here. If you pre-ordered, yearbooks will be available for pick up on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25 from 2PM-5PM in front of Shrevewood (under the overhang by door 1). (Please wear a mask and stay in your car. A volunteer will come to check your name off the list and give you your yearbook!)  If you are unsure if you pre-ordered, please email darlenehowell@gmail.com to check. Please be sure you come by during these windows to pick up your yearbook and a big thank you to Darlene McNerney for putting our yearbook together this year!

Have an SWES computer?

FCPS plans to offer a device to any student that needs one to access virtual learning. If you have a child entering sixth or seventh grade and has a Shrevewood ES laptop, we will be collecting it as new devices will be offered to rising 6th and 7th graders. Mr. Nguyen will ensure the laptop your return is ready to be given to a rising Kindergarten – Fifth Grade Shrevewood student. If you have questions about your child’s device, please email Mr. Nguyen at TVNguyen1@fcps.edu. Information regarding distribution of new devices will be shared in August.

Incoming Kindergarten "Playdates"

Is your child starting Kindergarten this fall? Do you know a family with an incoming Kindergarten student? We want to welcome all new Kindergarten students and their families to our community! A group of Shrevewood parents is coordinating ways for Kindergarten families to stay connected during this unusual time. We'll begin with online Meet and Greet "playdates" before school begins. Get connected here or email Tiffany at tmmcgettigan@gmail.com. We can't wait to meet you!

Meet our New Librarian!

Colleen

Hi Shrevewood! My name is Colleen Wenzel and I am so excited to join you as your new school librarian! I’ve taught both 2nd and 3rd grade and this will be my 6th year working in Fairfax County. When I’m not working, you can find me reading books, going for long runs, and taking yoga classes. I can’t wait to meet you all!

Shrevewood Mural

While we know that we will not be in the building to start the school year, we continue to improve our environment for the day our students do come through the doors. Thank you to our two amazing art teachers, Jessica Chin and Erin Byun and family members, for creating such a beautiful mural for our entire Shrevewood community to enjoy. It took them over 20 days to complete!
