Dear Seahawk Families:
As you have all heard by now, we are preparing for a full virtual opening. Administrative, technology and office staff are working to get the master schedule finished and begin preparing for our teachers to come back on contract Aug. 14th. Every year there are scheduling conflicts due to the number of courses we offer that only occur once or twice- Japanese 2, IB Business HL, Treble Chorus etc. Counselors will begin working through those conflicts and reaching out to families the week of August 10th. Also, we are still waiting for guidance on some courses that have challenges or restrictions in the virtual environment. If we need to adjust course offerings, we will reach out to those students and families.
Our Leadership students have already begun working on a virtual orientation and video tour of the building for rising 9th graders and other new students. Additionally, staff are working on a laptop distribution plan for all new students to South Lakes. We will also work on additional date(s) for the pick-up of yearbooks as well as retrieval of any items left in lockers from last March.
The bell schedule is in the final review stage at the FCPS Leadership Team level so hopefully we can share that out in the coming days. While we are in the all virtual model, the county is looking at an ABAB class rotations. For us that means Tuesday & Thursday=Blue, Wednesday & Friday = Green.

Update on VHSL Sports and Activities
VHSL announces sports/activities plan for 2020-21
The VHSL Executive Committee meeting in special session today voted (34-1-0) to move forward with Model 3 in its re-opening of sports and activities for the 2020-21 school year. Model 3 delays all VHSL sports and activities until December 14 and adopts the Condensed Interscholastic Plan. This model leaves all sports in the season where they are currently aligned.
Model 3 – Condensed Interscholastic Plan.
- Season 1 (Winter) December 14 – February 20 (First Contest Date – December 28)
- basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim/dive, wrestling
- Season 2 (Fall) February 15 – May 1 (First Contest Date – March 1)
- cheer, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, volleyball
- Season 3 (Spring) April 12 – June 26 (First Contest Date – April 26)
- baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field
“We all understand the physical and mental health benefits of getting our students back to a level of participation. The Condensed Interscholastic Plan Leaves open the opportunity to play all sports in all three seasons if Virginia moves beyond Phase III and/or Phase III guidelines are revised and High Risk Activities are allowed,” said VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. “This plan also allows schools the opportunity to open the year and get school started and deal with issues such as schedules, academic plans, transportation, dealing with possible outbreaks of COVID in the school.
“The VHSL will continue to work closely with the best available information and directives provided by the Governor, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).” Haun said.
Supporting our Community/ Community Resources
Back to School Bash (B2SB)
While we are not able to have our annual B2SB event in person this year, FCPS has adopted our idea of taking it virtual on a countywide level. For those of you unfamiliar with this event, it was a SL pyramid event that provided families access to community resources to support families in being ready for the school year. It included school system, local government and non-profit groups that support access to such things as: food resources, housing, medical assistance, transportation, mental wellness, recreation and more. We also provided vouchers for free haircuts, vision screenings, did school supply giveaways and more.
The core team (Cornerstones, Reston Community Center, YMCA Reston, Fairfax County NCS and select staff from FCPS) for this group is now focusing on supporting the virtual platform while also helping to raise money for school supply kits. The FCPS Foundation (non-profit) is running a Collect for Kids campaign. A $10 donation buys a kit. Kits are designed for either the elementary or secondary level. Partner's for Safe Teen Driving
Due to school closure during the spring some students were unable to attend Partner’s for Safe Teen Driving (PSTD). This 90-minute program is required to be attended by the student and their parent/guardian as part of classroom driver education to fulfill juvenile licensing requirements. Additional programs have been scheduled on July 29, August 5, August 10, and August. 17 in the evening. The programs will be held virtually and the student and parent/guardian must participate in the presentation together. Students should complete the form at https://forms.gle/62rXQuqszigZ5AZw6 to register for PSTD. Each session is limited to 40 participants (student and parent/guardian). Students will be registered first-come, first-served. Students must be logged into their FCPS Google account to access the form. A confirmation email and separate email with the Blackboard Collaborate link to join the session will be sent to the student’s FCPS Gmail. After completing the program the student will receive a certificate of completion in their FCPS Gmail. The certificate of completion will need to be sent to the student’s classroom driver education teacher. Please contact Carrie Reynolds at cfreynolds@fcps.edu with any questions.
These sessions are intended for students who were in classroom driver education last school year. If you have students who are rising seniors or recent graduates that still need to attend PSTD, please direct them to ACE.
