Woodburn News - July 24, 2020

Dear Woodburn Families,

It has been another whirlwind of a week!  We hope you have received the news that we will begin the 2020-2021 school year with virtual learning for all students.  As we prepare for this our first priority is to provide access and equity in the learning experience for each of our students. We understand that there are significant academic and social/emotional challenges to our students learning remotely and are working hard as a district to address these. We have strengthened our digital learning model so that we can provide an even more rigorous and engaging virtual-learning program with greater connections for all students at all grade levels.

We are currently finalizing class lists that match the needs of each of our students.  I will be sure to share more information about our class groupings as they are finalized.

We remain confident that our wildcats will have a great school year and appreciate your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Katy Richman, Principal

Meet Our New Staff!

We are excited to introduce new members of our Woodburn staff.  We know they will be great additions to our wildcat family.

Ms. Carlan

My name is Eliana Carlan.  I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia. This is where I obtained both a bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Education; majoring in Spanish. In addition to my education, I had the opportunity to teach English and Spanish to elementary students for over four years in Colombia. It was during this time that I realized teaching is not only my profession but also my vocation.  This is my second year working as a FLES teacher and I am very excited to work for both wonderful communities Clearview and Woodburn ES.

Ms. Imwold

Hello, Woodburn community! My name is Lauren Imwold and I will be teaching third grade this fall. I recently graduated with my Master's degree in Early Childhood Education, after working as a theater teaching artist and substitute teacher in Baltimore for many years. I am very excited to have my own classroom and to get to know you all soon!

Ms. Patel

Hi! I’m Purvee Patel and I am very excited to be a part of Woodburn ES as an art teacher! I have two boys, ages 4 and 5 and ½, and I love doing arts and crafts with them. Before having kids, I taught as a special education teacher/art teacher at Camelot ES. In my free time, I’m also a photographer, I like to cook, hike, travel (but now right now) and spend time with friends and family, and my two very cute King Charles Cavaliers. I'm looking forward to the school year!

Laptop Return

Laptop Collection - Rising 5th, 6th, and 7th Grade Students Only

On Monday, August 10, we will be collecting laptops from our rising 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students. Laptops and chargers may be dropped off at Woodburn Elementary from 9-12. When you drop off at Woodburn, please adhere to the following:

  • Drop off will be done at the front of school. Please drive up through Kiss & Ride lane.
  • Building access will not be permitted
  • One person may be permitted to get out of the car with a laptop and charger. They will place the laptop and charger on the table outside.
  • Student or guardian will tell the staff member the name of their student
  • Please allow us time to check in the device and verify the process for you.
  • While it is preferred that parents and students drive to the school, walk-ups will be handled as well. If you do walk up to the school, please ensure you adhere to social distancing and a mask must be worn.

By turning in their laptop and charger, the process for the FCPSon device pick-up will be more efficient. We will miss our rising 7th grade Wildcats!

Kindergarten Parent Questionnaire

We are very excited for our rising kindergartners to join our Woodburn community!  We want to learn more about our youngest wildcats and invite parents to participate in a brief survey.  The information shared will help us build strong classroom communities.

The Kindergarten Parent Questionnaire can be accessed here.  Thank you for taking time to share this information with us!

MackinVIA eBooks and Audiobooks

Students are invited to browse our collection of eBooks and audiobooks available through fairfax.mackinvia.com.  Users can also download MackinVIA from the iOS and android app stores to read or listen on mobile devices. Here is a four minute video demonstrating the features of MackinVia. For quick access, you can visit our Summer Information page

Our Food Drive Continues

A continued special thanks to Lynn Rozental for her amazing effort coordinating an ongoing food drive to benefit our community. Lynn will continue collecting and delivering food every Wednesday for the foreseeable future, so there’s still time to support our families! You can drop off food at 3403 Cypress Drive, Falls Church. There is a box on the porch 24/7.  No deadlines- whenever you have time to shop/drop off. You can also order food online and have it sent. If you have any questions please call 202-590-7034.

Book Drive

The Woodburn PTA is collecting children's books (K-6) for our community. Thank you to those that have already donated!  We have collected over 500 books!

Books can be dropped off at the school.  You will find a box located near the main entrance.

Books can also be dropped off at 3407 Executive Avenue, Falls Church or at 3701 Merrimac Trail, Annandale.  Both houses have containers located out front.

Mental Wellness Consultation Opportunity

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will continue to offer mental wellness consultations throughout the summer. If you have concerns about your child’s well-being or if your child would like to speak with a school psychologist or school social worker, please request a consultation.  Our FCPS mental health providers are available to help families get needed support through a 45-minute phone consultation or through secure video conferencing. Appointments are open to all FCPS families.

Consultations are offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social-emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning. Information about community resources will also be made available.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions; as well as academic challenges such as organization, time-management, or adjusting to a new school.

We encourage parents to take advantage of this service. Click here to request a consultation. You may also leave us a message at 571-423-4276.
