MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL - SCHOOL REOPENING SURVEY RESULTS

Dear Parents and Guardians:

On July 15, FCPS completed its survey of families and faculty members to obtain their learning options and teaching preferences, respectively.  This information will be used to determine online and face-to-face staffing for the 2020-2021 school year.  The following table contains the parents’ survey results for Westfield High School.

Our next step is to begin the process of staffing the school based on the survey results.  During previous school years, staffing is an 8-10 week process.  For the 2020-2021 school year, we must staff the school in less than 7 weeks; therefore, we will not accept any option or schedule change requests.  We have no further information to share on courses offerings at this point.

In addition to staffing, we are working on the opening of school events. Student and staff safety are key concerns as we plan these events; therefore, they may not look the same as they did in prior years.

We will continue to communicate with you as we have further information as it relates to the opening of school. We thank you for continued patience and understanding.

Stay healthy; be safe; GO BULLDOGS!

NEWS AND INFORMATION

Virginia High School League

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) Executive Committee met in a special session Wednesday, July 15, for the purpose of discussing the fall sports season. The Executive Committee unanimously voted to meet on Monday, July 27, to vote on the three recommended models presented at the meeting for reopening sports and activities.

The three models are:

  •       Model 1 – Leave all sports in the current season. Low and moderate contact risk sports that would be allowed to play are golf and cross country. High risk sports that would not be played are field hockey, football, volleyball, and cheer. Fall activities that would be allowed is theater.
  •       Model 2 – Switch Fall and Spring seasons. Low and moderate contact risk sports that would be allowed to play in the fall are track and field, tennis, soccer, baseball, and softball. High risk sports that would not be played are boys and girls lacrosse. Spring activities that would be allowed are theater, forensics/debate, and film festival
  •       Model 3 – Delay all VHSL sports and adopt the Condensed Interscholastic Plan. Leave all sports in the season where they are currently aligned.

o   Season 1 (Winter) December 14 – February 20 (First Contest Date – December 28)

o   Season 2 (Fall) February 15 – May 1 (First Contest Date – March 1)

o   Season 3 (Spring) April 12 – June 26 (First Contest Date – April 26)

The Committee also voted to delay the beginning of fall sports until a final decision is made on July 27. The Committee also suspended the July-August dead period for 2020 which means schools can continue out-of-season practice activities.

PSAT/SAT

FCPS is working closely with College Board to explore options for the PSAT and SAT exams during the 2020-21 school year. At this time, College Board is not offering a virtual PSAT or SAT. Unless College Board changes guidance, any PSAT or SAT would be offered in person. As soon as feasible based on guidance from the health department, FCPS will make a determination about the ability to host the PSAT and SAT in FCPS buildings. If/when FCPS is able to host the PSAT or SAT, the opportunity to test would be open to students whether they have selected the in-person or virtual option for the school year.
