Update from Dr. Smith

Bruin Families!

This week we received information that the school year will start 100% virtual.  We miss our students and we realize how important the Lake Braddock community is to our students.  With this news, our team is moving forward with coordinating some virtual events and getting ready for our teachers to return in a few weeks.  It is important to our team that we set teachers and students up to have a successful start to the school year.

We will continue to keep you updated as this situation evolves.  If you have questions, please reach out to us.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

HS & MS Summer Learning Information

To support student learning from June 29 to July 31, teachers will hold one hour per week of “office hours” for Continuity of Learning. Office hours for Mathematics, Language Arts, and English Language Development will be with one of our own outstanding staff members and are intended to support students with the digital practice resources and the English Language Development Summer Practice Book.

There are summer learning opportunities in a virtual setting for Middle School students. The information about these opportunities, contact information for staff and links for Google Classrooms can be found in the link below.

Accessing Laptop and Technical Support

Parents needing technical assistance with logging into an FCPS account can submit a request through this website.

Students who need technical assistance can contact a teacher who can put in a ticket for you. Our Technology staff will reach out to assist and, if necessary,  schedule an appointment. Please provide the following information to your teacher:

  • Student first and last name and ID
  • Student G-Suite email address or personal email (if gmail isn't working)
  • Parent's contact cell and/or email
  • Description of problem
  • Barcode of student computer

Final Locker Bag Pickup

We held our final locker bag pickup on Friday, July 17. The items that were not picked up will be sorted and prepared for donation. If you have items that you were expecting to receive but did not, we will have one additional day for parents/students to look through the items after they have been sorted. Details for that pickup will be sent in the near future.

Report Cards in Document Module

Final secondary report cards, in PDF format, will be available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE on Tuesday, June 23 at 6:00 a.m. For the first time, the Documents module will be available to students and parents. The report cards can be found under the Documents module of ParentVUE and StudentVUE, instead of linked within the Report Card module. This change was made to allow parents, especially those who opted to “Go Paperless”, to continue to see the PDF report card after SY 20/21 is closed out. A message will be posted in ParentVUE and StudentVUE letting users know where to find the report cards.

Mars 2020

In March, our very own student, Alex Mather, was a National Winner in the, "2020 Name the Mars Rover," contest and his winning name was Perseverance.

The launch window is approximately two hours, with a launch opportunity every five minutes. Live launch coverage will begin at 7 a.m.

VHSL will announce sports/activities plan for 2020-21 on July 27

The VHSL Executive Committee met in special session Wednesday, July 15 for the purpose of discussing the fall sports season.  The Executive unanimously voted (35-0-0) to meet on Monday, July 27, to vote on the three recommended models presented at the meeting for reopening sports and activities. The Committee also voted to delay the beginning of fall sports until a final decision is made on July 27. The Committee also suspended the July-August dead period for 2020 which means schools can continue out-of-season practice activities.

The three models presented to the Executive Committee for the opening of sports/activities are as follows:

Model 1 – Leave all sports in current season. Low and moderate contact risks sports that would be allowed to play are golf and cross country. High risk sports that would not be played are field hockey, football, volleyball, and cheer. Fall activities that would be allowed is theatre.

Model 2 – Switch Fall and Spring seasons. Low and moderate contact risk sports that would be allowed to play in the fall are track and field, tennis, soccer, baseball, and softball. High risk sports that would not be played are boys/girls lacrosse. Spring activities that would be allowed are theatre, forensics/debate, and film festival

Model 3 – Delay all VHSL sports and adopt the Condensed Interscholastic Plan.  Leave all sports in the season where they are currently aligned.

  • Season 1 (Winter) December 14 – February 20 (First Contest Date – December 28)
  • Season 2 (Fall) February 15 – May 1 (First Contest Date – March 1)
  • Season 3 (Spring) April 12 – June 26 (First Contest Date – April 26)

7th grade Jump Start

We are happy to share that our Jump Start site is now up and running!  Since we cannot all be together this summer for our traditional Jump Start Program, we wanted to create a virtual opportunity for students to explore more about Lake Braddock and receive some helpful tips for a successful middle school experience.  To access the Jump Start site, CLICK HERE, or visit the main page of the Lake Braddock website and look for the Jump Start announcement (Coming Soon!).

Be sure to check back in August as we will be offering virtual opportunities for students to connect!  As we learn more about the opening of school this year, we will continue to update our Jump Start site as needed.
