Woodburn News - July 17, 2020

Dear Woodburn Families,

We cannot thank you enough for submitting your preference for next year.  We are hard at work coordinating details for both our virtual and in-person settings and look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks.

Our current numbers indicate that we will have 229 students learning virtually and 281 students learning in-person.  We remain committed to ensuring strong classroom communities, high levels of learning and student success in both settings.

We currently have 23 Woodburn staff participating in an International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) course.  Together we are learning more about research-based, engaging, and impactful learning practices that can be used in the virtual setting. I know our teachers will be excited to showcase their learning when students return to school in September.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katy Richman, Principal

Meet Our New Staff!

We are excited to introduce new members of our Woodburn staff.  We know they will be great additions to our wildcat family. More introductions will be shared in the coming weeks.

Ms. Corlett

Hi, I am Victoria Corlett and I am thrilled to be joining the Woodburn community as a second grade teacher this year! I grew up locally (I was actually born at the hospital across the street!) and I recently graduated from James Madison University with my Master of Arts in Teaching. When I am not at school, I love to play with Ziba, my Iranian puppy. I am so excited to get to know all of you!

Ms. Coury

Hello Woodburn Community! My name is Sage Coury and I am thrilled to be joining the wonderful staff as a first-year School Counselor. I am a big fan of D.C. sports, avid Netflix viewer, lover of animals, and a musical theater enthusiast! Although this school year may look very different, I can't wait to meet all of you, offer as much support as I can, and dive right in!

Ms. D'Cruz

I am Elizabeth D'Cruz and I have just completed a master's degree in education and am returning to the classroom for my seventh year of teaching after a few years off with my children. I love teaching fourth grade, and I am so excited to be joining what I can already tell is an amazing school community here at Woodburn!

Ms. Kingsley

I am Nuril Kingsley and I am excited to be joining the Special Education team.  I consider myself to be a learner who strives to learn from, collaborate with, be inspired by, and inspire others (including my students). I’m a mom and an educator of three wonderful children from whom I gain inspiration everyday. I’m excited to be a member of Woodburn family!

Ms. Lockwood Gokcen

I am Mary Lockwood Gokcen and I am excited to be joining Woodburn as your new librarian. I believe the library is the heart of the school and I am really looking forward to working with students, staff, families, and community members to keep our library program healthy and strong. I am wrapping up my Masters in School Librarianship from Longwood University. I have been teaching for 14 years, the last 7 with Fairfax County.  I grew up in the Chicago area. I’ve lived in northern California, Florida, and with my husband in his native Turkey before we moved to Northern Virginia. I have one daughter who recently graduated from Fairfax High School. She is taking a gap year and will be going to Massachusetts College of Art and Design in fall 2021. I love animals and have a sweet little cat and I really want a French bulldog or a pug. In my spare time, I enjoy taking walks in the forest, knitting, and doodling, and reading.

Ms. McCarty

Hi Woodburn, I am Aly McCarty and I’m so excited to be joining you all full time as a member of the fourth grade team! For those who don’t know, I love sports, reading, spending time outdoors, and traveling. I look forward to tackling this unique year together!

Our Food Drive Continues

A continued special thanks to Lynn Rozental for her amazing effort coordinating an ongoing food drive to benefit our community. Lynn will continue collecting and delivering food every Wednesday for the foreseeable future, so there’s still time to support our families! You can drop off food at 3403 Cypress Drive, Falls Church. There is a box on the porch 24/7.  No deadlines- whenever you have time to shop/drop off. You can also order food online and have it sent. If you have any questions please call 202-590-7034.

Book Drive

The Woodburn PTA is collecting children's books (K-6) for our community. Thank you to those that have already donated!  We have collected over 500 books!

Books can be dropped off at the school.  You will find a box located near the main entrance.

Books can also be dropped off at 3407 Executive Avenue, Falls Church or at 3701 Merrimac Trail, Annandale.  Both houses have containers located out front.

Mental Wellness Consultation Opportunity

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will continue to offer mental wellness consultations throughout the summer. If you have concerns about your child’s well-being or if your child would like to speak with a school psychologist or school social worker, please request a consultation.  Our FCPS mental health providers are available to help families get needed support through a 45-minute phone consultation or through secure video conferencing. Appointments are open to all FCPS families.

Consultations are offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social-emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning. Information about community resources will also be made available.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions; as well as academic challenges such as organization, time-management, or adjusting to a new school.

We encourage parents to take advantage of this service. Click here to request a consultation. You may also leave us a message at 571-423-4276.
