Franklin MS Update - July 14

Dear Franklin Families:

The FCPS School Board met yesterday afternoon to discuss the Return to School plan.  Here are a few of the outcomes you need to know:

  • The middle school start time will be 7:15 am and school will end at 2:00 pm for both online and in-person classes.
  • All middle school students (online and in-person) will be following an A/B block schedule rather than 8 periods per day.
    • This allows for fewer passing times in the hallway
    • Allows for more total weekly instructional time. Classes meet 1 time per week with the in-person model and 2 times per week with the virtual model.
    • Provides a longer instructional time frame for courses with labs or needed prep time
  • For in-person classes:
    • Last names beginning with A-K will attend Tuesday and Thursday
    • Last names beginning with L-Z attend Wednesday and Friday
  • The deadline for selecting online or in-person instruction is July 15.  Parents can select the preferred option here.  Specific course offerings online and in-person will be dependent on student enrollment and the ability to provide appropriate staffing in each setting for each course.

We will send out bell schedules as the school year draws near. The slideshow from yesterday's School Board meeting can be found here.

In this presentation, you will find information about the following topics:

  • Health and Safety
    • Face coverings
    • Cleaning
    • Plexiglass Shield locations
    • Air Quality
    • Confirmed cases and school closings
    • Social Distancing
  • Bell Schedules - A/B Block Scheduling
  • Course Offerings
  • In-Person and On-line Comparison
  • Sports and Activities

Thank you to all of our families that attended one of our Franklin Virtual Parent Coffees yesterday. If you were not able to attend, a recording of the evening session is available here.

Our Franklin staff is ready to support our students with both options!  We miss our students and we miss our families.  I know that there are no easy answers and that there are many questions that still need to be answered.  More information will be coming out from FCPS in the weeks to come, so please read your emails carefully and visit the FAQ page on the Return to Learn website

Do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time at dpwright@fcps.edu if there is anything I can do to support you and your student through this process.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal
