Woodburn News - July 2, 2020

Dear Woodburn Families,

I hope this email continues to find you well. Thank you again for the warm welcome back.  Dwayne and I have had a busy week together filled with productive conversations about our upcoming school year. I am confident we will make this a great year for our wildcats!

I imagine that you may be feeling challenged by the updates last week from Superintendent Brabrand and the School Board about the return to school plan. I am anxious as well, and also sad to think that I won’t have the opportunity to greet all of our students on August 25th. However, we are stronger together and I feel confident that we will be able to support our students through staying connected and hopeful about the opportunity for learning that lies ahead.

Each of you has been tasked with the important decision of determining how school will look for your child(ren) in the fall. You should have received a letter from Superintendent Brabrand asking you to indicate your preference:

  • full-time online instruction (4 days/week)
  • in-person instruction with social distancing in the school building (2 days/week)

This choice will be a yearlong commitment. Please note that responses are due by July 10, 2020. If you do not respond, your choice will default to in-person instruction.

I want to do everything I can to support you in making an informed decision. Below you will find details about two upcoming events that will provide further clarification and time to answer any questions you might have.  I hope you might consider attending and look forward to seeing many of you this coming Tuesday.

Until then, I wish you a safe and happy 4th of July.

Katy Richman, Principal

School Reopening Q and A Event

Making decisions about returning to school is difficult and you may have questions about what school will look like when it opens.

To help inform your decision, we would like to call your attention to the FCPS town hall planned for July 6th at 6:30 pm. FCPS is also posting answers to frequently asked questions.

On July 7th the PTA will host a welcome back and Q&A about school reopening with Ms. Richman.  Please share your questions here. By collecting your questions ahead of time, we hope to track down as many answers as possible.  Zoom information is included below.

Please note we are postponing the PTA visioning sessions originally scheduled for July 6th so that parents can focus on the decision about returning to school and, if interested, attend the FCPS townhall. If you have thoughts about PTA priorities and activities for next year, please take our survey.

Meeting Details for July 7th:

Fairfax County Virtual Summer Camp Opportunity

The Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services is excited to announce that registration is now open for #NCSconnects Virtual Summer Camp – a FREE out-of-school time program for students in grades 1-6 and 7-12. This new four-week program is being offered as an alternative to the RECQuest and Teens in Action programs, which were cancelled due to COVID-19.  More information can be found here

Mental Wellness Consultation Opportunity

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will continue to offer mental wellness consultations throughout the summer. If you have concerns about your child’s well-being or if your child would like to speak with a school psychologist or school social worker, please request a consultation.  Our FCPS mental health providers are available to help families get needed support through a 45-minute phone consultation or through secure video conferencing. Appointments are open to all FCPS families.

Consultations are offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social-emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning. Information about community resources will also be made available.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions; as well as academic challenges such as organization, time-management, or adjusting to a new school.

We encourage parents to take advantage of this service. Click here to request a consultation. You may also leave us a message at 571-423-4276.
