Summer updates from Herndon Middle School 6/29/2020

Message From Principal Klena

Dear Herndon Middle School Families:

I hope this email finds you well and you are staying safe and healthy.  I am sharing an important announcement about our director of student services position at Herndon Middle School.  Mrs. Karyn Niles is taking a new position in FCPS and her last day with HMS is July 10th.  Mrs. Niles joined our administrative team in 2010 and she has served as our director since 2015.  Ms. Niles has been a tremendous support for countless families and students.  Our teachers and staff have also relied on her strong leadership and caring approach which has been consistent.  Mrs. Niles made the decision to return to the work she loves most as an educator, teaching.  She will be a classroom teacher working with students who are in our ESOL programs in FCPS.  I know you will join me in wish Mrs. Niles all the best.  I am grateful for her excellent contribution to our whole community.

I am pleased to announce Shirnesha Simpkins Church, our new Director of Student Services for Herndon Middle School.  Ms. Simpkins Church comes to us most recently from a position as the lead counselor at West Potomac High School.  Before taking this position, she served as an English teacher and team leader at Bryant Alternative High School and she came to FCPS after teaching for several years at Freedom High School in Woodbridge, VA.  Ms. Simpkins Church has led several schoolwide initiatives in her work as a teacher and counselor. She brings extensive experience in working with expanding access for AP and honors level course enrollment, expanding opportunities for students to gain college enrollment, and providing professional development around school partnerships to foster student success.  Ms. Simpkins Church also brings leadership experience in important schoolwide supports that are a focus at Herndon Middle School such as her work with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), The College Partnership Program, and AVID.

Ms.  Simpkins Church will start officially on July 13th and she is working closely with Mrs. Niles during the transition time.  Please continue to reach out to me and/or Mrs. Niles (KENiles@fcps.edu) with your questions during this time.

Sincerely,

Justine Klena JKKlena@fcps.edu
