Dear Shrevewood Families,
By now, you have hopefully seen the letter emailed to you this week from Dr. Brabrand describing the choices in front of all us parents (and teachers too). My advice at this moment is to maybe speak to your health care professionals and listen to your heart and do what’s best for your family. Know that as a parent myself, I am doing the same.
If there’s one thing I can say about Shrevewood’s families, we have persevered through this challenging time and we will get through the next stage too. Whatever decision you make, there will be highs and lows. There will be huge successes and there will be hiccups. Keep in mind, our partnership is extremely strong and we will navigate all of it together.
Two commitments I have for you now:
1) We will remain committed to working together as a Family. We will strive towards Excellence and forge Relationships so that all are included and welcome, whether face to face or virtually.
2) We will find joy and fun as we grow together and continue to build a strong community of collaboration and transparency through this unprecedented time.
Soon you will receive a survey from FCPS to respond to by July 10th. After we receive the results, your amazing and talented SWES staff will be at the ready to engage in community outreach, curriculum planning, and setting the stage for an extraordinary year. As we speak, different staff members are honing their skills in blended learning, collaborating as Tier 1 Behavior Wellness Team, learning through professional development and working to brighten our school environment.
Monday, you will receive updated information on optional summer Continual Learning opportunities via eNotify. In the meantime, we hope your children find time to just be kids and have fun for the summer!
Please reach out to me if you have any questions or thoughts. The only time I will not be available is July 6-10. I am taking some much-needed time to relax and recharge for the 2020-2021 school year with my family.
Once I get updated information about next steps, I will send out some communication to keep you in the loop. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I will be in touch with you soon!
Sincerely,
Joshua DeSmyter
Principal

We hope you are having a great summer! Whether you are relaxing, going on vacation, or hanging out by the pool, we hope that all of our students are continuing to sharpen their skills by working on the summer learning packets.
We are beginning next week (June 30th) and continuing for five weeks. Shrevewood ES students will have access to one virtual hour each week with one of our own outstanding Shrevewood ES teachers.
If your child has questions about the summer learning packets please reach out to our summer school staff to schedule an office hours appointment!

As decisions are being made regarding the fall, it is vital we have all kindergartners and new students registered. Important information will be emailed/mailed to parents of registered students and fall schedules will be determined based on the specific students in each class. If you, a neighbor, or friend have a child to register for Shrevewood ES, please start here!

Shrevewood ES blends the values of a Responsive Classroom Approaches school with the direct character education taught through the Positivity Project. Recently, the Positivity Project motto and hashtag was #OtherPeopleMatter. While the purpose was to teach our students to value the ideas, feelings, and perspectives of others, this caused conflict with the #BlackLivesMatter movement of which we support whole heartedly. Last week, The Positivity Project changed their motto and hashtag to not to detract from the Black Lives Matter movement.
The aim of the Positivity Project is to empower students to build positive relationships and become their best selves. With that focus, they have announced their new motto and hashtag to be #PositivityInAction. We will promote this new motto as we continue to embed the explicitly taught character strengths of the Positivity Project as a part of our social curriculum at Shrevewood ES.
