Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians,
We hope that you all have had an exciting and safe start to summer! Terra Centre is excited to announce that we will be hosting a weekly virtual student summer book club, Game Changers. The name was chosen to represent the people we will be studying through books, who have been Game Changers with social justice issues in our world (Caesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malala Yousafzai to name a few). It was also chosen to represent what we hope our students will emerge as in their communities: Game Changers.
Students will be split into groups according to their grade level from the 2019-2020 school year and will use Google Meet to meet virtually.
Grades K-1 will meet on Tuesdays from 10 -11 am.
Led by Mrs. Dailey, Ms. Hardy, and Mrs. Lemak (Morgan)
Grades 2-4 will meet on Wednesday from 2 - 3 pm
Led by Ms. Petruzzellis, Mrs. Roldan, and Mrs. Worth
Grades 5-6 will meet on Wednesdays from 1-2 pm.
Led by Mr. Lewis, Mrs. Seidel, and Mrs. Toth
The way the weekly meetings will be structured are as follows:

Welcome and introduction to the topic.

Read aloud by a teacher.

Discussion with the teachers and students. Teachers will come prepared with discussion questions, but the conversation will not be limited to teacher-directed questions.

Kids in Action. This is where we will introduce an ‘action item’ that we want the students to take from our discussion and follow up with into their daily lives. This could be a journal reflection, a conversation with parents, drawing a picture, community service ideas, etc.
Each week the community will be sent the book titles, discussion questions, and Kids in Action ideas. You will also be sent a google form, which you will use if you want your child to participate in the discussion for that week. Please note that when you fill out the google form, it is solely for that week. Since there are varying topics covered over the next 8 weeks, we want parents to have that information ahead of time before deciding to sign their child up. Please see below for the link to the Google form and a description of the books for Week 1.
If you choose not to participate in Game Changers this summer, we hope you might consider reading these books (many available on YouTube) and having discussions at home with your family.
