Freedom Hill Summer Update 6/15/2020

Principal's Message

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

As we close out the 2019-2020 school year, I want to say a special thank you to each and every one of you for your partnership this year. Although things ended in an unexpected way, it was a wonderful school year full of opportunities to grow through hardship and new challenges.

I hope you will all stay informed and engaged as the discussions about how we will resume school in the fall continue. You will receive opportunities through upcoming FCPS surveys to share your ideas and opinions. The voices of Freedom Hill parents deserve to be heard! The School Board will be deliberating on proposed plans throughout June and hope to have a plan to communicate to staff and families by the end of the month. Currently, there are three approaches being considered, and you can read a little about each one here: FCPS Return to School: Fall 2020. As you can imagine, whatever approach is chosen will set in motion even more strategic planning at the school level to guarantee your children are safe and getting the instruction and challenges they deserve from our school.

Also by the end of the month, students currently in grades K-6 will receive both a Mathematics and a Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail. Digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page. These books will provide recommended practice activities for students to review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year; they are not intended to preview content from next year’s grade level but rather reinforce essential learning from this past year.

Please see below for additional summer learning resources from our staff. I hope to see you soon!

Dr. Z.

Keep Reading This Summer!

Summer is starting and parents want to keep their children reading.  Parents might read to their students and/or promote their kids reading independently. We have books recommendation lists for either purpose in the link below!  Continue to read and listen to reading on myOn and Tumblebooks and consider audible’s free audiobooks for kids too: https://stories.audible.com/discovery.

Click on this link to see our book lists by grade level, reading level and/or topics of interests AND community reading programs!  Email Mrs. Rossman if you have questions about summer reading: Melissa.Rossman@fcps.edu.

Read Alouds w/ Mr. Fenton

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

Continuing to read over the summer is an important activity. Along with your home reading, why not take an opportunity to stay connected to school!  Mr. Fenton, our IT specialist, likes to participate in guest reading in the classroom and continued this with distance learning. He would now like to continue connecting and reading over the summer with the students. Listen to exciting books about Llamas destroying the world, stories from Sideways School, Wizards of Once, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and many more!

Sessions will be held twice per week. (Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11AM) One is for K-3, and another is for 4-6, where he and some special guests will read a variety of books. Your student can listen and join discussion in 1 or both sessions which will include students from both schools he supports: Freedom Hill and Stenwood. The sessions begin June 15 and 16. The first K-3 book is Llama Destroys the World. The 4-6 book will be the beginning of Wizards of Once: Twice Magic.

If your student is interested, please fill out the Google form to be invited into the Blackboard Collaborate session. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Craig Fenton: craig.fenton@fcps.edu.

These are the supply kits delivered to school in time for the first day in Fall. It's an easy way to get your back-to-school shopping done in minutes and never leave home.  DONATE BOOKS AT EOY PICK UP

As you do end of year pick-up, please consider donating gently loved books at that time in the box near the FHES library/bookroom returns. FHES staff was able to give away hundreds of books to students who felt they needed them on Thursday, March 12 from our Bookmobile book collection. Please consider replenishing our Bookmobile collection with books you are looking to donate. Highly engaging books, including fiction or nonfiction; board books, picture books, chapter books and/or Young Adult, are best.
