MESSAGE FROM WAKEFIELD FOREST ELEMENTARY

congrats

Dear Wakefield Forest Families,
Despite the ups and downs of the 2019-2020 school year, we have had a lot to celebrate this week. We had an amazing virtual promotion for our sixth graders on Thursday; it was truly heartwarming. We also had fun goodbyes for our kindergarten – fifth graders this morning. We will truly miss our students.

At this time we don’t yet know exactly what the 2020-21 school year will look like. Whatever is decided, we will be working hard throughout the summer to prepare so that we can ensure a successful start of the school year. We will communicate throughout the process to keep you informed. Any decisions made will take into account the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

We very much appreciate the family partnerships we experienced this school year. Thank you to our amazing PTA Board: Susan Johnson, Katina Scott, Jonathan Osten, Malena Barzilai, Caron Atiyeh, Kokeb Kassa and Katherine Ely. We are grateful for all of their contributions, as well as the many PTA chairpeople who organized and oversaw extracurricular enrichment programs, fun family activities, and successful fundraisers.

We would also like to sincerely thank our WFES families for everything they did to support their children’s distance learning experiences. It always takes a village to help our children/students. This rings true even more this year under these trying circumstances. We truly appreciate your support and encouraging messages.

If you would like to take advantage of the summer teacher office hours, please see the information below to register your child.

This summer, more than ever, we all need to take time to breathe, relax, and recoup. I know the Prindle clan is looking forward to a break. I hope you all find time for the same.

Best wishes,

Sharyn Prindle
Principal

Summer Continuity of Learning – For Currently Enrolled Students
This summer FCPS will be mailing math and literacy workbooks to your home to support your children’s continued learning. We will also have teachers available one hour per week for support. This one hour per week is intended to answer questions about the provided workbooks. The ESOL teacher will be in contact with families who will receive that support this summer.

Important message from the Wakefield Forest Library

All parents of students that still have library books checked out received an email listing the books and their replacement costs on the evening of Monday, 6/8.

Please look for these books at home and return them to Wakefield Forest as soon as possible. Today, and during the week of June 15 - 19, there will be a box on one of the benches under the overhang at the main school entrance; you may drop off your books there at any time.

Please contact Wakefield Forest librarian Amy Rapuano at alrapuano@fcps.edu  if you have any questions.

WFES Summer Reading Classroom
Be sure to check out and join the new WFES Summer Reading 2020 Google classroom! Not only does this site have word-solving strategies and comprehension conversation starters, but it also has 4 virtual bookshelves where your child can click on book covers and hear the author read the story aloud! You can also click on the Fairfax County Public Library poster in the virtual classroom to enroll in their summer reading program. To join this Google classroom, go to Google, click on the classroom icon and enter the class code: btem2ke Questions? Contact our Reading Specialist, Suzanne Rubinstein at sprubinstein@fcps.edu

myOn Account
All currently enrolled K-12 students will continue to have access to myON over the summer through the start of the school year using their current school and FCPS username and password.

Registration
If you have a student to register for next year, please scan a copy of all required documents to our School Registrar, Ms. Holmes, at KSHolmes@fcps.edu. Original documents will need to be shown prior to the start of the school year, but we can begin processing this information from scanned documents. Early registration for next year is important as it supports the number of teachers for which we are staffed. Information on required registration documents can be found here: https://www.fcps.edu/registration.

Not returning to WFES for SY 20-21?
For membership and staffing purposes, we would like to hear from families who are not returning to Wakefield Forest in August for the 20-21 school year.  If your children (K-5) will not be attending WFES in the fall, please email Ms. Holmes directly at KSHolmes@fcps.edu and let her know.

Laptops
All students who have borrowed a laptop from Wakefield Forest ES and are returning next year may keep the devices through the summer in order to support the Continuity of Learning. Sixth grade laptops will be collected in August. If you have borrowed a device and are moving, please contact alwilliams1@fcps.edu to schedule a drop off time.

Distance Learning Survey
Parents, be sure to watch your email for an important survey about distance learning and returning to school this fall. FCPS wants feedback on your distance learning experience this spring and your views about proposed return to school options. Your voice matters; please share your thoughts with us as we plan for fall 2020.
