Dear West Potomac Pyramid Families,
The following message was sent last week to all West Po pyramid schools. I wanted to wait to send this to you because I had two specific messages for our high school community that needed to be sent first. I wanted clarity around where we are here at West Potomac HS. Please see the message below as my part in the commitment to the entire West Potomac Pyramid community as well.
As we continue to witness the deeply disturbing images of hate, racism, and violence that are unfolding across our country, the West Potomac Pyramid Principals, collectively, want to share our sadness and outrage.
We acknowledge that these events are painful—particularly for our Black and African American community members. We acknowledge that there are feelings of fear, anger, confusion, uncertainty, and desperation. As members of the West Potomac Pyramid Community, we see you and stand with you. Racism and hate have no place in the world and no place in the West Potomac Pyramid. Diversity makes us stronger, and we are proud to lead a diverse community.
In response to these events, our teachers will support students as they have questions and concerns. We understand that conversations build relationships and relationships are essential to developing respect, understanding, and appreciation for one another’s unique and beautiful differences. When we look to our students, we see hope in our future. We know that every student is important and has great potential. We as educators nurture and protect that potential so that it may be actualized in our students’ future selves. Hope moves us forward.
Our work will move beyond this school year, as our schools continue to receive professional learning on equitable and culturally responsive practices. We are committed to furthering our learning in order to dissolve racism and injustice while promoting inclusive school communities where diversity is valued, appreciated and celebrated.
