Justice Newsletter -June 7, 2020

“My wish for you is that this life becomes all that you want it to. Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small and that you never need to carry more than you can hold.”– Rascal Flatts

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

As we approach our final week of school, our teachers and students are putting their finishing touches on final learning opportunities and planning their virtual goodbyes.  It was fun to see many of our seniors during cap and gown pickup and items drop-off, and we are all looking forward to their Graduation Photo Op on June 16th – 18th.

Recently, we sent out a survey to our underclassmen asking for feedback on their distance learning experiences. Students can access the survey by clicking on this link . Students must be logged into their fcpsschools.net account. We hope to gather data to help us reflect on and refine our distance learning strategies.

Last week you received a letter from our Justice Pyramid Principals. I am grateful for the many conversations I had with community members, Justice staff and other educators throughout FCPS this past week about racism. These are conversations that will continue. We must be steadfast in our responsibility to each other, our students and community, and society to challenge and oppose hate and racism.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with questions or concerns.

Summer School - Continuity of Learning

FCPS school buildings will remain closed through the end of July. Therefore, we will continue to provide optional, virtual learning opportunities for students from June 29 to July 31. Students currently in grades 9-11 will have access to a Google Site that provides practice on essential skills to review over the summer. The Google Site(s) will be located on the Free Summer Offerings page and will be live by June 24. The Mathematics site will focus on practice of essential mathematics content. The Language Arts site will provide practice on grammar and mechanics and offer choice reading opportunities. A supplemental English Language Development Summer Practice Book will be mailed to students enrolled in High School ESOL Newcomer Programming (ELP Level 1 & 2) in Grades 9 - 11. These books will provide English Language Development practice activities to support and enrich language development during the summer. High school English Learners enrolled in Individual Math and Algebra 1 Part 1 in the spring of 2020 will mailed an Algebra preparation focused math packet. Students with disabilities accessing the Adapted Curriculum will receive four packets mailed to families in July to support their learning.

To support student learning from June 29 to July 31, teachers will hold one hour per week of “office hours” for Continuity of Learning. Office hours for Mathematics, Language Arts, and English Language Development will be with one of our own outstanding staff members and are intended to support students with the digital practice resources and the English Language Development Summer Practice Book. Attendance is optional. The office hours schedule will be posted on the Justice HS website. To register your student for office hours and receive a secure link, please complete the Justice HS Continuity of Learning Registration - Summer 2020. Once registered, your child will receive log-in information through his or her FCPS Google email address prior to the first session.

The Verdict Final Issue: A Salute to Our 2020 Seniors

The final issue of The Verdict is now online! Click here to read the final farewell from our editor-in-chief, messages to our graduates, and stories from the rest of our student writers. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported the student journalism program this past year. We appreciate everything you do!

Senior Transcripts

Through the Senior Survey process, seniors indicated which college they will be attending and where Justice HS will send their final transcript. Final transcripts will be sent to colleges the week of June 8th. Seniors will receive an unofficial copy of their transcript along with their diploma during the scheduled photo opportunity appointments June 16-18.

Senior Virtual Graduation and Celebration

Graduation Celebration & Photo Op - June 16, 17 or 18: With the school as a backdrop and Pomp and Circumstance playing in the background, a counselor will announce your name as you walk onto a small stage wearing your cap & gown and holding your diploma. A professional photographer will be there to take your picture as you walk across the stage, and again with any family that accompanies you. An email has already been sent to seniors with appointment times. We will send a reminder email later this week.

Virtual Celebration Photos Due June 12: The virtual celebration will be compiled by our partners, Marching Orders and Stage Clips. Seniors were sent an email on 5/25 with the subject line “Graduation” with a link to MarchingOrder.com to complete their slide.  They were also sent a reminder email this morning with the same link.

Seniors must upload their information by Friday, June 12. If a senior prefers that we use their yearbook photo, they must indicate their wishes to participate, by filling out this form from their FCPS account by Friday, June 12 in order to be included in the virtual celebration. If a student does not wish to participate in the virtual celebration, please email Jason Kagarise (JMKagarise@fcps.edu) by June 22, 2020.

Final Grades

Final Grades will be available in SIS on Friday, June 12th. The Grade Book and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed Friday, June 19 at 4:00 p.m. Report Cards will be mailed centrally. Parents/Guardians may opt into “Go Paperless” for report cards by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to discuss any grading concerns.

Academic Career Plan

Your student has been working all year on his or her Academic and Career Plan (ACP) in Naviance Student. During this period of distance learning, we encourage you to use Naviance Student with your child to explore college and career options.
