MRES Update - June 5, 2020

Dear Marshall Road Families,

As this school year comes to a close there may be mix of relief and worry related to learning.  Regardless of where we have been the last few months we always advocate for a summer filled with reading and some curious exploration!  The weekly parent guide may include some suggestions for summer learning.  Please be aware that for language arts and math, students can “play” this summer through the FCPS public Universal Screener website. Students just log in with their FCPS credentials.  Your student may groan a bit when they see iReady as we also use this as a screener during the school year.  The programming for the summer is different and has a “gamified” approach to practicing skills that are tailored to your child’s strengths.  We encourage you to try this out this week so you can reach out to your teacher during the final week of instruction if you need clarification on accessing and using this resource.  Additionally, some of the licensed programs we have been using during distance learning will be available for portions of the summer.  See the list below for those programs end dates.

Wishing you a relaxing summer of rest, fun, and continued exploration.

Liz Calvert, Matt Chapman and Sue Kirby

Summer Reading

It’s that time of year, Roadrunners! Summer is right around the corner and we hope many of you continue your reading journey to get prepared for next school year.  Our summer reading program will be a little different this year.  We will not be doing a raffle prize drawing in the fall, however our main goal is for students to continue finding great books to enjoy and to stay connected with one another.  To help us all stay connected, students and teachers can post book recommendations, reading tips, and more on the Summer Reading Flipgrid page at: https://flipgrid.com/mressummerreading.  Students can also fill out the Portrait of a Graduate activity board for reading ideas and inspiration.  Check out Mrs. Hoffman’s Library Google Site to access the POG activity board and to see grade level book suggestions: https://sites.google.com/fcpsschools.net/mreslibrary.  Students must login with their FCPS Google accounts to view Mrs. Hoffman’s Google Site.  If you have questions or concerns about summer reading, please contact Librarian, Lisa Hoffman, at lahoffman@fcps.edu.

iReady Open for June and July

iReady instruction is available for use by K-6 elementary school students during June and July of 2020 at no additional cost.  This is being turned on to provide optional individual practice to students.  Students may access iReady instruction as soon as it is practical for schools, teachers, and students.  Lessons will be curated based on the student’s most recent test score in reading or mathematics during the fall or winter test windows.

If a student has not completed an assessment, lessons have been curated with current grade level content and foundational skills.  Reading instruction is available to students in grades K-6, while mathematics instruction is available to those students in grades 1-6.  Access to iReady will be turned off August 1, 2020.

Students will access iReady instruction through the FCPS public Universal Screener website, where they will enter their FCPS login credentials.  Though teachers are not required to use iReady lessons, teachers are expected to demonstrate to students how to access the resource.  A short presentation on how to support this task is available (to download a copy) at FCPS-iReady Onboard Lesson Presentation.
