PRINCIPAL DAUGHERTY

Dear Beech Tree Families,

This past Friday, the rest of our student belongings were packed up and prepared for pick up. We have added an evening time slot for student belongings to be picked up. On Monday, June 8th from 3:00pm-6:00pm, you may come through Kiss & Ride to pick up belongings for students in any grade level. Please remain in the car and hold up a sign with the grade level, teacher name, and student first and last name. We will bring your students’ bags out to your car. We will also have a box out front at the Bus Loop by the main entrance, for you to drop off library books, should you wish to return them prior to summer break. ALL 5th graders’ instruments, library books, and patrol belts will need to be returned through the Bus Loop at the entrance to the school lobby.

We will also distribute student belongings from any grade level on Tuesday, June 9th from 9:30am-12:30pm. We will follow the same procedures as stated above.

If you ordered t-shirts for “The Jungle Book” musical, they will be available for pick up at Kiss & Ride, during these blocks of time, as well.

On Friday, June 12th from 2:00pm-3:00pm, we will be collecting laptops from those students who have moved or are moving out of the Beech Tree ES boundary. Our 5th graders who are going to Glasgow Middle School may keep their laptops over the summer.

This summer, virtual resources will be available on Blackboard 24-7, and Language Arts and Math review workbooks will be mailed home to students. The Beech Tree staff listed below will be available to provide office hours through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra from Monday, June 29 - Friday, July 31. These assignments are based on students’ current grade levels. Times and directions for access to virtual office hours will be shared soon.

ESOL = Michelle Schlesener

SpEd = Emily Gleason

Kgt = Stacy Carter

1st = Tina Britton

2nd = Lyly Lieu

3rd = Nadya AbuRish

4th = Claudia Romeo

5th = Safaa Ahmad

  • K-8 language arts and math workbooks will be mailed to families prior to Monday, June 29th.

  • The workbooks will be organized in "sections" so that teachers can communicate which pages/lessons might be focused on for that specific week's office hours.

  • Answer guides will also be posted digitally to support teachers and parents.

  • Both Math and LA will target essential skills and concepts that review 2019-2020 grade level curriculum and focus on independent student practice.

  • Supplemental ESOL workbooks will be developed for ELP levels 1 and 2 to focus on English language development.

As we end the 2020 school year this week, we celebrate the retirement of Ms. Diane Day, Kindergarten teacher, at djday@fcps.edu, and Ms. Judi Fouse, special education teacher, at JAFouse@fcps.edu. If you would like to send them a note, I know they’d love to hear from you!

This week, let us also be sure to let our students know how proud we are of them for their perseverance and resiliency. Please take a moment to also let our teachers know how much we all appreciate their hard work. During this COVID-19 Closure, I have tried to picture myself teaching on-line while also being a mother to my “Bam-Bam” when he was little. He was extremely active and I cannot even imagine how I would have been both mother and teacher. I am incredibly proud to work with the best Fairfax County Public Schools has to offer.

As always, I thank you for your trust and I thank you for your partnership. Please reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns.

REMINDERS:

Donations for 5th grade t-shirts

Our PTA was able to quickly put together 5th grade End of Year t-shirts for all our 5th grade students. We usually have more time to collect payments from parents of 5th graders. Staff are pitching in to help with the cost. I know many of you have also offered to help out any way you can during this time, so I thought I’d share the link below, should you wish to make a donation towards the t-shirts.  This address should be entered on PayPal in order for you to give a donation towards the cost of the t-shirts: donatebeechtreepta@gmail.com

Fairfax County Libraries: Curbside Services Fairfax County Public Library’s Curbside pickup of holds and grab bags begins Monday, June 1.Curbside pickup hours at all branches are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To pick up your holds:

  • Please park in the designated area of your library’s lot and call the branch phone number posted on the sign. Branch phone numbers can also be found online on individual branch webpages.
  • Provide your library card number to staff on the phone and remain in your car until your holds have been deposited on the pickup table and library staff have returned to the building.

In addition to picking up holds, you may request a particular book or a staff-selected grab bag based on reading level and preferences by calling the branch. Contacting the library with requests ahead of time will provide a faster pickup experience. All returned library materials should be deposited in the library’s book drop. Do not return library materials to staff or the pickup tables. Please continue to keep your Inter-library Loan (ILL) materials; the ILL department will notify you when we are ready to accept them. FCPL’s curbside services are completely contactless — at no point will you physically interact with the library staff helping you. Other steps we are taking in our curbside pickup process for the safety of staff and patrons include:

  • Library staff will wear cloth face masks, and we encourage you to do so, too.
  • Books will be packaged in a plastic bag to streamline handling.
  • The pickup table will be disinfected regularly.

Returns Fairfax County Public Library is ready to accept returns of borrowed materials beginning June 1! On or after June 1, please return borrowed FCPL materials to the book drop of any FCPL branch (except Lorton Library, which is closed for renovation). To help us accommodate the return of the 500,000 items currently on loan, returns will be accepted on a staggered basis according to the first letter of the borrower’s last name:

  • On Mondays we will accept returns from borrowers with last names beginning with letters A-H (Anderson, Daqqa, Howard, etc.)
  • On Wednesdays we will accept returns from borrowers with last names beginning with letters I-Q (Jefferson, Nguyen, Park, etc.), and
  • On Fridays we will accept returns from borrowers with last names beginning with letters R-Z (Rodriquez, Shen, Williams, etc.).

Although book drops remain open 24/7, the library requests that you follow this staggered system to help us manage the volume of incoming materials. Alternatively, you may continue to keep borrowed items, as overdue fines are suspended and due dates for all physical materials will continue to be extended to ensure that no late fees accrue while FCPL branches are closed.
