Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We are reaching out to our Shrevewood community to acknowledge the events that have transpired portraying the anger and hurt that exists in our country.  Racism and hate have no place in the world and no place in our community.  These times are when we need each other most.  While we are socially distanced, never forget that we are always here for each other.

We will continue to help our children embrace the Positivity Project’s  “Other People Matter” mindset by remembering that our words and actions affect others, that we can support others when they struggle, and that we should be present and give our full attention to others.  We continue to believe, now more than ever, in the importance of character strengths like perspective, integrity, kindness, humility, bravery, and love.  We know that what we teach our children – how you build relationships with them, empower them to build relationships with each other, and strengthen their resolve to work through difficult problems – has a lasting impact on creating the citizens and leaders our communities need. Citizens and leaders that can help to unite their communities in an increasingly uncertain and fast-paced future.

In our classrooms and within our school community, we will continue to learn about, value, and embrace each other’s differences with hopes to change the conditions that allow injustice.  Each school in FCPS has an Equity Lead who partners with the Principal to ensure staff have the tools to recognize and take action on inequities within our buildings. We, as a staff, have participated in professional learning on equitable and culturally responsive practices and are committed to furthering our learning in order to address the topics of racism and equity with our students and with each other.

We will face these difficult conversations with vulnerability, an open heart and the Other People Matter mindset.  We will not remain silent, as these events cannot be ignored.  We will work together to identify ways to continue important conversations as a community now and continuing next school year. Tylea and I know we speak for our entire staff when we say that at Shrevewood we are committed to continuing to promote inclusive, anti-racist school communities where diversity is valued.

As a community, we are here and we stand together.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter and Tylea Holley

Positivity Project- Creativity

p2

So, why is creativity important?

Creativity is associated with intrinsic motivation, meaning the process of creation is an end in itself. The work is not accomplished in order to receive an award. Creativity is also correlated with self-actualization, or fulfilling one’s talents and potential. Those with the strength of creativity have the urge to create, to build something new and original. The act of creation makes them happy.

On a group level, creativity is vital. It helps us solve seemingly impossible problems, create something we never knew we wanted, or simply see the world in a new way. Technological examples include the printing press, refrigeration, electricity, automobiles and the internet. And think of what we’d be missing without Renaissance art, Enlightenment thinking, Harlem Renaissance jazz, or hip-hop emerging from the South Bronx in the 1970s and 80s.
