Hunt Valley Calendar

June 12th - Last Day of School
June 12th - Virtual 6th Grade Promotion

Dear Hunt Valley Families,

I have been struggling to put my thoughts into words as we have all been hearing the news of the latest tragedy affecting our Black community. I know that many members of the Hunt Valley community are deeply and personally affected by the killing of George Floyd. As a principal, I have a responsibility to ensure that all students, families, and staff who call Hunt Valley home feel safe, welcomed, and valued. Recent events have reminded me that there is more that we must do as a school to ensure that our students, families, and staff members of color feel valued and are treated with equity.

I am committed to learning from students, families and staff about what steps we can take to fulfill our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming school for all members of our community. I know that this process will take difficult conversations, introspection, learning, and a willingness to listen openly to members of our community who are affected. I know that I have a lot to learn in this process and I plan to work at it every day. I welcome these conversations and intend to listen and learn from members of our community about what I can do to better serve the Hunt Valley community.

I know that being aware of inequities and having good intentions and saying that we are trying to do better is not enough. I am committed to taking action to do right by our students, families, and staff members of color and make changes when issues are brought to my attention. Our school Equity Team has been brainstorming ideas of actions we can take in the coming year to make positive changes at Hunt Valley. I hope that the community will also share ideas with us about what we can do going forward. I hope that we can all hold each other accountable for making the changes needed to best serve our community and make Hunt Valley the school that all our students deserve.

We understand that each of you may be affected by these events in a different way, and we welcome you to reach out to our administration, school counselors, school psychologist, or social worker with any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

As a community, we are here, and we stand together.

Take care everyone,
Mr. Fee

From the FCPS School Board

June 5, 2020

Dear FCPS Students, Families and Staff,

The events occurring across the country in the aftermath of the tragedy surrounding George Floyd are a response to the injustices we have witnessed for far too long. Images showing the brutal treatment of Mr. Floyd and other African Americans weigh heavily on our hearts and in our minds.

The pain and anguish displayed on our national stage developed from generations of systemic racism impacts our students, families, staff and communities. We embrace our responsibility to ensure our schools are safe havens where all students are welcomed, valued, respected, and greeted with opportunity.

Working with the community as One Fairfax, this Board is committed to identifying actionable items to improve policies, procedures, curriculum and access to opportunities to ensure that students, families, and staff do not experience injustice and inequities in Fairfax County Public Schools. We will seek reform, reflect on our own biases and engage in difficult conversations. During this process we will partner with our community, invite public comment and seek collaboration with state and local leaders.

We value diversity and are united in our opposition to racism and hate. We stand in solidarity with our black students, educators, staff and their families. We must unite and be agents of change in working to build a better world. We cannot and will not be silent.

Sincerely,

The Fairfax County School Board
