A Letter from the Oakton Pyramid

RCMS Front

Dear Oakton Pyramid Families,

We hope that this message finds you well.  Our community has endured wave after wave of incredible challenges in 2020.  The coronavirus, the economic hardships, feelings of uncertainty, and the incredible upheaval happening right now as the struggle for civil rights continues.  As educators, we continue to wonder how our students are making sense of this reality and trying to understand their place in a world that is facing so many challenges.

It is heartbreaking and disturbing to see the images of hate, racism, and violence that are occurring nationwide.  Please know that these forces have no place in our community and the Oakton Pyramid will continue to be a place where all of our students are welcomed, valued, and supported.  Our vision and mission are centered around modeling respect and striving for inclusivity of each student.  This vision and mission will not fade in the face of all that we are facing. We are committed to continuing our learning so we can do a better job of confronting these important issues.  We can always improve so that we can best meet the needs of your children.  When we have experienced other difficult times in the past, we have the benefit of seeing our students and being able to engage in dialogue through our classes to help process what is going on.  Although we are separated from one another, our commitment to provide a safe place for learning, reflection, and support remains strong.

Our teachers have been given resources as well as our entire clinical team of counselors, our school social worker, and our school psychologist. All staff email addresses can be found on the Rachel Carson Website.  If you prefer, your son or daughter may email their counselor, or any member of our clinical team  directly so we can offer them a place online to talk things through. If you are struggling on how or where to begin these conversations, please do not hesitate to reach out to us as well. We will join with you to support your child.  Please visit our Student Services web site at:  https://carsonms.fcps.edu/index.php/student-services
