Letter to Our Community (English and Spanish)

Dear Mt. View Family,

At Mt. View our goal is to provide a high-quality education for all students and to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all students.  At Mt. View the faculty and staff welcome everyone, we value diversity, and we strive for inclusiveness and compassion.  We also acknowledge that there are certainly instances in our building of students feeling marginalized. Our faculty and staff work diligently to improve on our weaknesses and continue to improve the environment for all students.  We are saddened and outraged by the instances of racism and hate that are occurring in our country.  We know these events are especially painful for our African American community members, and we stand with you.  We are proud of the richness our diversity brings to the Fairfax County community, and racism and hate have no place here.

As educators, we recognize that we are leaders in the community, and we have an obligation to act.  Our goal is to continue our efforts to learn about, understand, and embrace each other’s differences so that we can create a better community for everyone, especially our minority students, colleagues, and families.  We will continue to pursue Portrait of a Graduate traits that promote our students as caring, compassionate young leaders who will help carry this mission forward.  Our staff will continue to receive professional learning on equitable and culturally responsive practices.  Again, we recognize that our community, and school, have work to do as we continue to challenge inequities and make positive changes at Mt. View and beyond.

We want you to know that Mt. View is here for you.  The recent events have been upsetting and traumatic for many.  If a student needs support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school counselor, assistant principal, clinical staff, mentor, or me if you have questions.  We are all here to help, and strive to be part of the solution.

I am honored to be a principal of a group of students that continue to demonstrate such resilience, hope and strength in this time of unrest. I look forward to the day we are all under one roof again. Until then, please know that we are here for you and you are important to us.

Respectfully,

Joe Thompson

Principal

SPANISH VERSION:

Estimada Familia de Mt. View,

Respetuosamente,

Joe Thompson

Director General de Mt. View
