Daniels Run Down-Family Edition, June 5, 2020

Principal's Corner

Greetings Families,

We are preparing for the last week of the 2019-20 school year which includes celebrating our 6th grade class as they move on to middle school and our Kindergarten class as they complete their first year in public school.  Although these celebrations will be different from our traditional events we look forward to seeing our students and families.  As our attention turns to the 2020-21 school year I encourage you to watch the FCPS School Board meeting on June 15th as details are discussed regarding the opening of the 2020-21 school year.  Also, please mark your calendar for 2020-21 Back To School Nights:

  • Wednesday, August 26 - Pre-K - 2nd grade - 6:00-8:00 pm
  • Thursday, August 27 - Grades 3-6 - 6:00-8:00 pm

Summer Reading Challenge!

We are excited to announce that Summer Reading begins on June 15 and will run through August 24!

The goal is simple: read every day. You can read anything, from magazines to books to cereal boxes! You can also use resources like MYON, TumbleBooks, and Scholastic. Exercising those reading muscles through the summer months will help kids stay ready for school in the fall! Reading for at least 20 minutes every day is a great habit to start!

We have included a fun twist on summer reading with various challenges and fun ways to incorporate reading into every day life. We hope you enjoy it!

Fairfax County Launching Parent Support Line and Online Parent Café

Fairfax County Government is launching a parent support line and will begin hosting an online Parent Café on Monday evenings, where parents can connect with each other to process through and share different strategies. Some thoughts that might be exchanged:

  • What are you doing during this time?
  • How are you dealing with this?
  • How are you dealing with distance learning while still doing your job?
  • How are you dealing with not losing it when your kid asks for snacks for the 600th time?

The Parent Café will be held on the conferencing app Zoom on Monday evenings from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

To participate, you’ll need to register at least 24 hours ahead of time by calling 703-324-7720, or you can send an email to buildingstrongerfamilies@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Student Registration

Schools remain closed to families; however, if you have a rising kindergartener or other new student to register, we would like to do a preliminary registration now.  If you know of any families that would be new to Daniels Run (that have rising kindergarteners or students in grades 1-6), please forward this information to them.  Early registration for next year is important as it supports the number of teachers for which we are staffed.

To register your child for school, please email anunez@fcps.edu with “Registration” in the subject line.  If you are able to fill out the form using this link https://danielsrunes.fcps.edu/new-student-registration-2020-21 save it to your device, and attach it to the email to send back to us, that is the preferred option.  If you are not able to do that, please let us know when you might be available for a phone interview.  After we receive your email, we will reach out with any additional questions. If you have any questions or concerns about registration, please email Mrs. Nunez.

Grab and Go Meals

FCPS is providing no-cost grab and go breakfast and lunch meals from 9:15-9:45 a.m., Monday through Friday at Daniels Run ES.

All FCPS students (regardless of age) are eligible for no-cost grab and go breakfast and lunch, as well as other county children, under the age of 18. Adults picking up meals for children should let staff know how many children's meals they need. Adults may pay $2 for the meals as well.

Meal pick-up stations are generally located in the bus lanes at the schools or in the kiss and ride area. Look for the canopy tent along with Food and Nutrition Services staff, who will deliver meals directly to vehicles.  Walk-ups are welcome at all sites. Walkers are asked to use school sidewalks to safely navigate their walk to the pick-up stations.

As a reminder, it is important to follow social distancing guidelines. Be sure to stand a minimum of 6 feet apart from others and practice regular hand washing, including prior to leaving a residence to pick-up meals, upon returning home, and before consuming food.
