Distance Learning Schedule

General Information

Distance Learning Updates/Resources

This Thursday June 4, we were not scheduled to have classes so that all staff could attend graduation to celebrate the Class of 2020.  While we are unable to celebrate graduation in the traditional sense, the entire class is coming to the school throughout the day to pick-up their caps/gowns/diplomas and more!  Many of our staff members wish to be present (socially distancing) so that we can send off the seniors with a proper goodbye.  As such, some classes may not meet as scheduled on Thursday so that teachers who wish to attend are able to do so.  Any teacher not attending, will hold their sessions as scheduled.  Teachers who are attending will post work for students to complete and will be available during their regularly scheduled office hours on Wednesday's and Friday's.

  • Important resources regarding the distance learning plan can be found here.
  • All school closure resources for Oakton High School can be found here.
  • All school closure updates and resources for FCPS can be found here.
  • To better keep in touch with students during this time, information will routinely be posted on the Class level google classrooms.

Course Requests - SY 2020-2021

Course request for the 2020-2021 school year are viewable in SIS ParentVue and StudentVue. Please review your student’s course request to determine if any changes are needed. If you wish to make a change, please email your student’s counselor. Course request changes will be determined on a case-by-case basis only when space is available. Deadline to request a course change is June 16, 2020. We will provide another opportunity to request course changes when counselors return to work on August 6, 2020. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s counselor.

Underclass Material Drop Off/Pick-up

This Friday, June 5, Monday, June 8, and Wednesday, June 10, we are scheduling pick up and drop off for underclass students.

This is for any student who would like to hand in a textbook they were issued this year or have other school materials to return.

For students leaving Oakton High School, we ask that they return all textbooks and materials, as well as their computer and charger.

The only items that will remain unavailable for pick-up will be items stored in PE lockers.  Those lockers were not specifically assigned to students.  As such, we are unable to properly bag items for their return.  When we are allowed to have students in the school again, we will organize a pick-up of those items.

Here is the schedule for drop-off and pick-up:

  • Friday, June 5 from 10-12 and 12:30-2:30 for students with last names A-L to drop off items
  • Monday, June 8 from 10-12 and 12:30-2:30 for students with last names M-Z to drop off items
  • Wednesday, June 10 from 10-12 and 12:30-2:30 for make-ups and any other pick-ups students might need of items left at school.

You can find more detailed information here.

Recently our school social worker, school psychologist and student services department teamed up to offer a parent coffee to support parents of teens during this pandemic.  Please find the recording here if you were unable to attend.

Interdisciplinary Program Updates (Presentations or Learning)

The 2019-2020 has been an unprecedented experience for Oakton students and teachers encompassing both a traditional classroom setting, as well as, distance learning during the second semester. This year, instead of our traditional end of year “Presentations of Learning,” we are asking students to complete a Reflection on Learning. These Reflections on Learning will be personalized, reflective virtual presentations through which students will utilize their skills of self-awareness, critical thinking, communication, creativity, and citizenship.

These will be optional activities that students can use to receive feedback on their expression of these reflections and skills. Oakton students and teachers value end of the year reflection and this project is a way to preserve this important aspect of Oakton’s culture during the 2019-2020 school year.

Oakton students will be given the opportunity to answer a question that is designed to promote thoughtful reflection. Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors will reflect on their learning specifically in the 2019-2020 school year.

More information about Reflections on Learning can be found on our website

Senior Survey

SENIORS – Each year, FCPS seniors complete a brief, 8-question survey at the end of their Senior year. The survey is online in Naviance Student and usually takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. This is how Student Services sends the final transcript to the college you are attending.  If you are pursuing employment, military service, career education, a year off, etc., this is how we celebrate you!

Parent Resources

FCPS has compiled a list of mental health resources that you may find beneficial.  Each week I will highlight a few of the opportunities available. However all of the resources can be accessed here at any time.  Mental health resources and emergency services information can be found here.
