Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood families,

Thanks to those of you who joined our Principal’s Coffee yesterday. Here is the presentation with notes from this session: Principal’s Coffee 5/28.

For the past few weeks, we have shared information about the service activities and opportunities for our upper grade students through Hive Happenings, email, and directly with our students.  All remaining applications are due today.  Please make sure you have reviewed these options with your child and submitted your applications if your child is interested in participating next year.  You can apply for more than one as some you can participate in simultaneously.

We are requesting a response from ALL rising 4th, 5th, and 6th grade families on the Band/Strings form, as your family’s selection impacts your child’s Specials schedule here at school. We hope to collect responses from all rising 4th, 5th, and 6th grade families by today, Friday, May 29th.  We will be following up with every student and family that we do not hear from.

Please carefully review the section below on Student Item Pick Up/ Drop Off which is scheduled from Tuesday, June 2nd - Thursday, June 4th.  We are so looking forward to seeing you all during these days next week.  Many staff members have eagerly volunteered to come in to help on these days knowing that it will be a chance to see some smiling, familiar faces through the car windows.

Have a great weekend and please give us a wave next week!

Sincerely,

Erica Riley, Principal

Student Item Pick Up/ Drop Off Information

Our teachers have packed up their classrooms, including all student items which have been separated into individual, labeled bags that are ready to be returned to your child.

Preparing for Pick-Up Day:

  1. Please create a sign with your child(ren)’s last name and first name(s) clearly visible from your vehicle’s dashboard. This will help our team quickly identify cars and deliver items.
  2. Please take a few minutes to look through the items here. There are numerous winter jackets and sweatshirts since the last date we were in the building was March 12th. If you find an item in the lost and found, please complete this form so we can place that item with your child’s other items for pick up on June 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.
  3. Bring any school items such as library books, classroom books, FCPS rented instruments (if you are not continuing the instrument next year or are in 6th grade), patrol belts, and recorders from Recorder Ensemble.

Arrival at your Pick Up Window:

  1. Enter Stenwood from Gallows Rd and use the bus lane.
  2. Remain in your vehicle. We will be wearing PPE to deliver items and collect any items you might have. Let staff members who are assisting know if you have medication to pick up.
  3. Follow the signs to control traffic flow.

Applications for Service Activities and Electives

Parents of Current 3-5th Grade Students:  Please review the service activity opportunities with your child and take some time to understand the options, responsibilities, and application requirements.  Below is a list of programs, sponsor contact information, descriptions, application form links, and due dates for applications. Staff Appreciation Week FlipGrid Videos

Our staff was overwhelmed with the heartfelt messages they received on their FlipGrids for Staff Appreciation Week! Thanks so much to our PTA for facilitating this special treat and keeping it a secret from our teachers- they were SO surprised!!!! Many have expressed interest in continuing to share the love, which is why we would like to share all of the links out the community.

Staff Appreciation FlipGrid Links

Flipgrid is a VERY easy recording platform. Once logged in, all you need to do is click on the link and press the GREEN plus sign.  The videos are limited to 2 minutes (your child does not need to record for two minutes!). The FlipGrid settings are such that only the staff member, Mrs. Riley, and Dr. Mitchell can view the video you upload.

How to Use FlipGrid:

FlipGrid

To login you will click the link and  select “Log In with Google.” Your child will need to use their fcpsschools.net email and password to login.

Then just click on the green plus and leave a video!

Library Book Return

Are you wondering what books your child has checked out and would like to return them next week at student pick up?  Well, wonder no more!  Here are the directions to see what is on your child’s account:

  1. First, to go to the library catalog, Destiny Discover, click on this link: Stenwood Library
  2. On the upper right-hand side, log in. (Use your FCPS network login information and login in the blue FCPS link).
  3. In the upper left-hand corner, click on the three lines and scroll down to checkouts.  This will show you what your child currently has checked out.
Book Return

Please do not “renew” any of the books.  Return what you can find and just leave the other books on your child’s card.  We’ll take care of everything over the summer.  There are NO fines for overdue or lost books!

Any questions?  Contact Mrs. Cole at nhcole@fcps.edu

New Ebooks Available in the Stenwood Library!

ebooks

79 new ebooks have been added to the Stenwood catalog.  These books are for Stenwood students only.  In order to share the limited resources, students will be limited to two checkouts at a time for 10 days.  They will be able to renew if the book is not on hold.  Yes, students can put ebooks on hold.

You can even download the MackinVIA app to Kindle/Apple/Andriod devices for easier reading!

Please click here for directions on accessing ebooks.  Directions are also in the grade level Specials Google Classroom.  As always, let Mrs. Cole know what questions you might have:  nhcole@fcps.edu.
