Attention parents of seniors for 2020

Parents of Seniors

Thursday, May 21, 2020, marked the last day of classes for Cedar Lane’s class of 2020.  While none of us wished for your students to end their High School career sitting in front of a laptop in their living room, I must say how proud we are of them for their resiliency and dedication.

Per Dr. Brabrand’s letter to FCPS Seniors dated May 12, 2020, the school system is looking at several options for Senior Celebrations:

  • Individual Graduate Photo Opportunities
  • Virtual Celebration Video
  • Face-to-Face Ceremony in the Fall of 2020

The Individual Photo Opportunity will take place in the last two weeks of June at Cedar Lane, following safety criteria set forth by the Fairfax County Health Department.  This event will occur outside the building where seniors and families could exit their vehicle for a quick photograph in front of a Cedar Lane backdrop.  You will receive scheduling information at a later date.  We are scheduled to receive the caps and gowns the first week of June.  We will reach out to you at that time to come to the building to pick them up.  The charge for the caps and gown is $30.  A more detailed letter regarding the individual photo-op will be sent out next week.

FCPS has contracted with a vendor to produce a Virtual Celebration Video for all FCPS High Schools.  The video will contain speeches, messages from staff, and each senior will be recognized by name and photo.  Cedar’s video celebration is scheduled to be aired on July 3, 2020 at 6:00 PM.  Letters to both the graduates and their parents with additional details will be mailed next week.

Grades

Per direction of the VDOE, no grades will be given for students’ 4th quarter work.  Teachers will enter NM (No Mark) for 4th quarter in their gradebook.  Teachers enter feedback of Proficient, Attempted, or Not Attempted in SIS as feedback for individual 4th quarter assignments.  Proficient being defined as 75% accuracy/correct on any given assignment.  Students can earn a “bump” of one grade distribution (C to C+) towards their final grade by the following:  Feedback of Proficient on 4/5 assignments with zero Not Attempted assignments.

A student’s final grade in a Year-Long class will be the highest of the following:

  • Avg of Qtrs. 1, 2, & 3
  • Avg of Qtrs. 1, 2, & 3 with 1 grade distribution increase earned during distance learning (if applicable)
  • 1st Semester Grade
  • 1st Semester Grade with 1 grade distribution increase earned during distance learning (if applicable)
  • Quality Points as per FCPS Grading and Reporting

A student’s final grade in a SEMESTER 2 class will be the higher of the following:

  • 3rd Grade
  • 3rd Grade with up to 2 grade distributions increase earned during distance learning (if applicable)
  • Semester 2 classes are Algebra 1, Geom. Pt. 2, SOL Math Remediation, and any electives the student entered after S1 ended.

Please contact me at tplundy@fcps.edu if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
