WAKEFIELD FOREST ES Weekly Message

Dear Wakefield Forest Families,

As the weather gets warmer we all start thinking about summer, although this summer will be very different for many of us. As you may have seen in the communication that came out Friday, FCPS will be providing some support throughout the summer. Elementary school students will have the opportunity to focus on math and literacy skill-building using self-directed print and digital materials. Each school will have teachers who will support students in their summer learning experiences from June 29 - July 31. As additional information is available about the support this summer, we will share that with you.

Meanwhile, staff have been working hard to pack up classrooms and to bag student items. We will do our very best to return all items that we are able to identify. Please sign up to collect your student materials using this link. When you come to collect student materials, please plan to bring library books, cleaned patrol belts (see below), band/strings instruments borrowed from FCPS if in 6th grade, and any other school materials. We will work to return student medication during your scheduled pick up.

We are busy planning for our sixth grade promotion ceremony, scheduled for June 11, 2020 at 9:00 AM. Sixth grade families will be getting more information about this soon. We are excited to get to see all of our sixth graders together virtually. Due to virtual capacity restrictions, this will be limited to sixth graders’ immediate family members and select staff. We will record this event to share with 6th grade families.

Thank you.

Sharyn Prindle
Principal

Library Books
In the coming days you and your child will receive an email about WFES library books that are currently checked out to assist you in locating these at home. As we are cleaning classrooms, we are checking in any library books we have found. We will continue to search for books.

Patrol Belt/Badge Return
Before returning patrol equipment in early June, please remove the badge from the patrol belt, hand wash the patrol belt with mild detergent, and air dry. Please do not reattach badge, as badges and belts will be placed in separate boxes.

K-2 Laptop Distribution
We have now been given approval to expand our laptop distribution to K-2. Resources are limited, please only complete the survey if your child is in grades K-2 and you don’t have a device for him/her to use at home. Please complete this form if your child needs a laptop in order to access distance learning at home.

Please note: Families that respond that they need a laptop will need to answer mandatory Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) questions for screening individuals and there will be a health protocol implemented for the pickup. This is to ensure the safety of those individuals picking up and distributing devices. In addition, one parent and the student will need to come to school during their scheduled appointment time to get the laptop. The student is required to come, as they will log into the device. Please have the student wear a mask; the parent will remain in the car while the student logs in on the sidewalk. Additional information will be provided to the families during the scheduling process.

Mental Health Support

The Wakefield Forest mental health team will present strategies for wellness during COVID-19 on May 28, 2020 at 3:00 PM. Please join at https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/97ba7d1107904d4fa3d4b1f61edc0240 through Chrome.

We understand that this is a stressful time for students and families. If your child needs a check in from a member of our mental health team, please complete this survey and one of our staff will reach out.
If you are seeking supports for working with your child during this time, there are some at this link towards the end of the webpage:

Kindergarten Registration
If you have a student to register for kindergarten next year, please scan a copy of all required documents to our School Registrar, Ms. Holmes, at KSHolmes@fcps.edu. Original documents will need to be shown prior to the start of the school year, but we can begin processing this information from scanned documents. Early registration for next year is important as it supports the number of teachers for which we are staffed. Information on required registration documents can be found here: https://www.fcps.edu/registration .

Not returning to WFES for SY 20-21?
For membership and staffing purposes, we would like to hear from families who are not returning to Wakefield Forest in August for the 20-21 school year.  If your children (K-5) will not be attending WFES in the fall, please email Ms. Holmes directly at KSHolmes@fcps.edu and let her know.
