Freedom Hill Weekly Update 5/4/2020

Teacher Appreciation Week

Dear Freedom Hill families,

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Before we discuss our teachers, we want to thank all of our parents, caretakers, and community members that have provided for our students' academic and wellness needs during these last months and helped to ensure their safety. So many have made lifestyle adjustments and have earned an "Honorary Teacher" badge. This week, we appreciate you, as well!

From our PTA:

What an extraordinary time to be a teacher. Quite a transition from in person to online learning and that's no easy feat. Let's celebrate our classroom teachers, specialists, administration and FHES staff! While we would have loved to celebrate them in person, our Teacher Appreciation team (thank you Tina Crawford) has sent every staff member an envelope with some tokens off our appreciation in the mail! And look out on Friday on social media for a little surprise!  We want our students and parents to help out virtually:

Food Resources

food

FCPS continues to expand the number of locations for food sites.  Please use this link as it will continue to be updated. There is also bus route food distribution that stops at Freedom Hill Monday-Friday at 10:40, as well as a few other stops in the community. Check out the schedule here

Laptop Distribution

dl

Laptop distribution has been accomplished for students in grades 3-6. If you missed out on our distribution day, please email our technology specialist, Craig Fenton, to schedule a time to pick up a device. He will be holding "office hours" each Wednesday.

At this time, the Fairfax County School Board has not included grades K-2 in the laptop distribution plan. We will update the community if this changes.

PTA Information

VIRTUAL PTA MEETING RECAP AND AWESOME FOGO DE CHAO FDO

We had a great virtual PTA meeting last week. Thanks to all who attended and our special guests Karl Frisch, the FHES Mental Wellness team and Dr. Z and Mr. Kopacz. Here are the meeting minutes and the powerpoint. Special thanks to our nominating committee for putting together our Officer Slate for 2020-2021. Thank you to those of you who participated with the Fogo de Chao Family Dinner Out/Fogo to Go! We are working with them to determine how much we raised for No Kid Hungry and the PTA.

BROWN BAG LUNCH ON MAY 11

Come chat with our administrative team on Monday, May 11th from 12:30-1pm. Join here online or call by phone 301-715 -8592 and use ID: 965 6300 6403. Many PTAs are working with their principals on virtual coffees or lunches and we wanted to try this out during the day. Let us know if there is a specific topic you'd want to discuss so Dr. Z and Mr. K. can bring appropriate staff if needed. The power of our FHES community is great!

BIKE/WALK ABOUT DAY ON MAY 13

This year, FHES is again participating in Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 13th. Our school will join over 2000+ schools across the US to help raise awareness on road safety and promote exercise. This year will of course be a little different, but there are two ways we invite you and your family to participate:

1- Get outside- ride your bike or take a walk!

2- Write a message of encouragement or thanks to members of your community on the sidewalk with chalk or in your window.

Take photos of the above and post them to the FHES Facebook group or tweet them tagging the @FreedomHillES account and using hashtags #BiketoSchool, #VisionZero, or #FHHighlights. Props to Sam Lee and Ms.Trzcinski for pulling this together!

READ-A-THON PRIZES ARE IN!

Read-a-thon prizes have arrived and a big thanks to the Camara family for sorting them! Please email readathon@thecamaras.net to coordinate read-a-thon prize contact-less porch pick-up by May 15th. Please include your student(s) full names.
