4th Quarter Grading Clarity

FCPS has stated that the 4th quarter is NOT graded and does not get averaged into the final mark for the year.  Teachers can use students’ participation in activities to bump their final mark for the year by one degree (ex. From B to B+).  Their participation in 4th quarter cannot lower their final grade.  The county also provided three codes which now appear in SIS:  P (Proficient), A (Attempted), and NA (Not Attempted) to help teachers and parents track student participation.

Because the 4th quarter is NOT graded, and we do not have control of these codes, Liberty will be using the “Proficient” code to mean that an assignment was completed rather than to communicate the students’ mastery or accuracy with that assignment which aligns more clearly with the other two codes.  Otherwise, clearly defining what “Proficient” means takes us back into the participation being “graded” creating more angst for both students and staff.

Teachers will use these codes as feedback and take them into consideration for bumping up the final mark recognizing the challenges students must overcome simply to participate.

Grades should not be our primary motivator or focus during this time. Quality instruction, engagement, well-being, and staying connected should remain our focus. To support well-being, we have further adjusted our parameters around workload after hearing from our students and parents.  Outside of the 45 minute scheduled sessions, each course’s assignments should require no more than 90 minutes during the rest of the week. If it is taking your student longer in a particular content area, please guide them to set that limit and contact the teacher for support.  Resources have been developed and sent through Blackboard to support your student with self-managing their assignments and time.

I am so proud of and thankful for our amazing teachers as we celebrate their dedication during Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. Thank you to our PTA and everyone who has reached out to express your gratitude and offer encouragement.  We want you to know that we could not do this without you.  Thank you for remaining as our partners in this time that calls for unity.
