Kilmer MS News You Choose and Parent Sessions #30

Students in Ms. Fogel's class

Many teachers were able to hold Office Hours this week. Above, two students in Ms. Fogel's orchestra class enjoyed getting to see each other and their classmates.

From the Principal's Desk:

April 24, 2020

Dear Kilmer Families,

We were happy to connect with many of you during the Parent Information Sessions held on Thursday and Friday. The focus of the information sessions was to share information about asynchronous and synchronous learning, recommendations for accessing the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra links, and information about a streamlined communication system.  We recorded the sessions and they can be found here. Please note all sessions cover the same material.

Monday is an asynchronous learning day. On asynchronous days, students can complete posted assignments and access posted resources. Tuesday is an asynchronous and office hours day which means students can connect with teachers virtually as well as continuing to complete assignments. We will be holding synchronous instruction (virtual classes) on Wednesday and Friday. Please see the schedule below.

Please take care of yourselves and each other.

Sincerely,

Amy Miller

Principal

Overview of Grading Practices for 3rd and 4th quarter

Third quarter has been extended to Friday, May 1st. Teachers may continue to work with students to close out the third quarter and accept assignments through that date. Access in ParentVUE and StudentVUE to view the report card module will be closed from Friday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. until Saturday, May 9 at 6:00 a.m.

Fourth Quarter Timeline:  While third quarter work is being accepted until May 1st, fourth quarter work has been assigned to students.  Any new work will be entered into fourth quarter gradebooks beginning Monday, May 4th

Providing Feedback to Students/Parents and Monitoring Progress: Beginning fourth quarter, teachers should provide feedback such as comments on quality of work and guidance for improvement.

  • Assignment “marks” will be entered into the gradebook and will be: Proficient, Attempted, Not Attempted.
  • This data will be considered to positively influence the final course grade.
  • Students and families will be able to see “marks” in SIS, though weekly emails will not be sent since there will not be a quarter 4 grade.

Additional information about how final grades will be calculated will be shared at a later date.

Reminders

Learning Packets

The FCPS Learning Packets provide opportunities for students to practice and apply skills while supporting student needs for engagement, critical thinking, and movement. Learning Packets are mailed out weekly from FCPS. In addition to being mailed out they are posted on FCPS-24-7 Blackboard.

If you plan to access the learning packets online by logging into FCPS 24-7 Blackboard, you can choose to go paperless and opt out of receiving the mailed copies.

Families who opt out will be notified by email and will have the opportunity to opt back into receiving printed packets by following the instructions on the email.

To stop receiving the printed packets, you will need your student's FCPS student ID and the enrolling parent’s email address.

Please expect to receive at least one additional printed learning packet after your request to go paperless is entered.

Learning at Home: Support for Families

The Learning at Home: Support for Families web page provides information about the role of families and caregivers in the FCPS Distance Learning Plan. This site is updated often – please return often for additional guidance and resources.
