From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of the CHS Community:
Happy Friday. Yesterday we heard positive feedback from teachers that many students were able to successfully log into Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and connect with their classroom teachers. By Tuesday April 28, we hope and believe that all virtual classrooms should be back and up and running. Below are some important updates regarding grading and end of year plans:
Third Quarter
Third quarter has been extended to Friday, May 1st. Teachers may continue to work with students to close out the third quarter and accept assignments through that date.
- Access in ParentVUE and StudentVUE to view the report card module will now be closed from Friday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. until Saturday, May 9 at 6:00 a.m.
Fourth Quarter
Fourth Quarter Timeline: While third quarter work is being accepted until May 1st, fourth quarter work has been assigned to students. Any new work will be entered into fourth quarter gradebooks beginning Monday, May 4th.
Providing Feedback to Students/Parents and Monitoring Progress: Teachers should provide feedback such as comments on quality of work and guidance for improvement.
- Assignment “marks” will be entered into the gradebook and will be: Proficient, Attempted, Not Attempted
- This data will be considered to positively influence the final course grade
- Students and families will be able to see “marks” in SIS, though weekly emails will not be sent since there will not be a quarter 4 grade
- For teachers using a Rolling Gradebook or a Standards Based Gradebook, students may not submit assignments/assessments from quarters 1, 2 or 3 for regrading during quarter 4. Standards that continue to be part of quarter 4 coursework, may be marked as proficient, attempted or not attempted.
Calculating Final Grades
Final Exams: There will be no final exam and/or culminating activity included as part of the final course grade calculation this year.
Year-Long Courses - Calculating Final Grade
- Teachers have the discretion of raising a student's final grade by one grade distribution (B to B+), based on demonstrated proficiency of quarter 4 learning.
- A student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:
- Average of Qtrs 1, 2, & 3
- Average of Qtrs 1, 2, & 3 w/1 grade distribution increase consideration
- 1st Semester Grade
- 1st Semester Grade w/1 grade distribution increase consideration
- For Rolling Gradebook a student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:
- Quarter 3 grade
- Quarter 3 Grade w/1 grade distribution increase consideration
- 1st Semester Grade w/1 grade distribution increase consideration
Current Semester Courses - Calculating Final Grade
- Schools/teachers have the discretion of raising a student's final grade by two grade distributions (B to A-), based on demonstrated proficiency of Qtr 4 learning.
- A student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:
- Quarter 3 Average
- Quarter 3 Average (w/up to a two grade distribution increase consideration)
Report Cards
Report Cards/Progress Reports: Report Cards/Progress Reports will be mailed centrally for both third and fourth quarters.
Parents/Guardians may opt into “Go Paperless” for report cards by following the below instructions:
- Parents/Guardians can take advantage of the paperless option, by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option. This option must be selected prior to May 12th to prevent the 3rd quarter report card from being mailed.
Last Day of School
The last day of school for all students (except seniors) is Friday, June 12. Seniors’ last day of school at Chantilly HS is May 27th.
Summer Courses
Additional summer offerings and support through FCPS summer learning programming are being discussed and will be shared as soon as available pending developments with the state-wide closure of schools.
Regards,
Scott Poole

Tilly Tune of the Week
Alright, let's have some fun! Each week we'll post a new song, the "Tilly Tune of the Week," and invite our CHS community (kids, parents, cats, goldfish...) to share a performance of the tune with us via email. We'll put together a "community performance" of each tune based on the submissions received!
Thanks to those to shared their music with us this week! Enjoy this collection of Chantilly community performances of Chantilly Lace!

GO CHARGERS!
Don't be shy! Show us that Chantilly pride! GO CHARGERS!😁
In the Community
The following initiative, Teens United, is being driven by a group of concerned Chantilly HS students
Over the past month, a group of high schoolers have come together to form a non-profit called Teens United. Teens United's mission is to provide free delivery service of daily essentials items, such as groceries and medicine, to the elderly and seniors, to our frontline workers, and those families and individuals most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Teens United website, www.TeensUnited.org, has recently gone live and they are asking different community centers, churches, and most importantly schools to help us spread the news of free delivery service to the community as well as to help us recruit much-needed volunteers and future Teens United team members.
Teens United is looking for volunteers who can pick up and deliver already pre-paid and pre-ordered groceries, medicine, and other essential items from their local grocery and pharmacy stores free of charge.
You can help Teens United and your community by getting the word out:.
· Share the announcement on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, like us on www.Facebook.com/teensunited2020
· Send out the announcement via e-mails to your staff, members, students, and friends, anyone else interested in supporting Teens United mission.
· Help us find sponsors and donors for the Teens United. Please ask them to donate and to give on our website, www.teensunited.org/donate-give
· Helping us grow. We are looking to expand our team and need additional team members.
Teens United is a section 501(C)3 organization. All donations are tax-deductible.
Our goal is to provide a safer and more united community where those who are most impacted by the pandemic can feel at ease. Our service is currently available in the greater Fairfax County area and with plans to quickly expand to other parts of Northern Virginia, and beyond.
Thank you and we wish you a safe and healthy return to work and daily life. I hope to hear from you soon. Should you have any questions, please e-mail info@teensunited.org
